I spent a bit longer in my local tackle shop today than I normally do, looking at non-carp tackle and I noticed that there was some 150m spools of Shimano braid in various breaking strains for about £15.
When you consider that a branded braid hooklink costs the same for around 130m less product, it makes me wonder whether trying the Shimano stuff would be worthwhile.
It's not mega supple, but not stiff either, kind of in-between and I suppose this would vary depending on the diameter.
Any thoughts?

Good idea! I'll go in cut 20 inches off the spool, might even get a few different breaking strains.

Mainline braids and hooklink braids are very different. You could well end up with something too thin, that therefore acts like cheesewire and causes mouth damage. Use the correct thing for the correct job

One use that I use braid for is "Hair" lengths. I just cut a length off, separate the strands and use them for the hairs.. Very thin, strong and flexible. A 300 metre spool would probably last till the end of time used this way.
I bought some Fox hair braid material last year, useless on a long cast as the hair and bait, even doubled, just snaps off on impact with the water. Probably not even strong enough to sew a button on.
It was this that gave me the idea to use the strands off normal braid.

I've used dental floss for year's since the '80s it's nothing new.
But, I find it not perfect, once you have been using it for a few casts it starts to become a bit frayed and if your hair is just long enough to fit your bait on and a tiny bit left to fit your stop it can be a bit of a pain to bait up. So I end up having to replace it.
Plus, it's overkill when baiting up with a couple of small particles or even an 8mm boilie or poppup.

I've still got a spool of Samson 6lb braid use it when I think it's needed but not very often. Most modern braids are supple enough compared to the rest of the rig. You only really need a very fine braid when using a very small light bait, or a critically balanced bait.
