Question out of curiosity...
I was talking to an angler on the bank last weekend about the lake, he'd fished it for years, he was a tench angler and not into carp angling but he seemed very knowledgable all round on his fishing.
We were talking how much weed there was in the lake, he said it was much worse because of all the carp now in the lake.. The conversation then moved on but afterwards I wondered about his comment.
Is there any validity in the statement that carp encourage weed growth? Or is that just a load of waffle?

I'd have said that the complete opposite is the general rule. Loads of carp=less weed, low stock of carp can=more weed.

On of the lakes I fish is 45 acres and pretty low stock a few years ago there were only 25 carp and some tench, it is very weedy last year at least 75% of the lake was full of Canadian
I believe carp tend to root it up so I would also say the opposite is true

As been said carp root up weed and destroy it but perhaps he meant that the resulting nitrates from the carp anglers bait was promoting weed growth.

Rooting weed up as you put it spreads the weed, it's like planting thousands of tiny cuttings. Add to that the bait that's fertilizing every lake that's fished then yes it's correct Carp and Carp fishing is beginning to choke many many lakes with weed.
You wont see much weed in the classic day tickets, over stuffed with pale mud pigs constantly churning up the bottom and ****ting turns the water cloudy, low light levels = no weed or very little.
