Does anyone feel they waste far too much time on social media, checking email, or just general screen time?
Certainly does seem to be a problem these days. Has anyone ever done anything about it?

It's an obsession and it seems to be getting worse. Soon we won't be able to talk to each other it will be text across the tables. Been away for a week, in restaurants and bars, most people constantly on their phones and couples sat silent tapping away, so much for relationships! Probably on brag book or arranging their next shag
It rang home to me when we bought our daughter an IPad like you do. Became an obsession and caused some proper falling out and arguments. She was knackered all the time, on it in bed until 1 and 2 in the morning prior to school! Come home from school, straight on it. Been the ******* that I am I limited her time on it in the end. 2 hours after school at her choice then I used to take it off her at 9pm, every night for months, some proper moods and arguments but I won in the end. Not good for the mental health at all for me, falling out with others on brag book etc etc, plus it's difficult to control what they are viewing, not good
Try to cut mine back, it's out of boredom a lot of the time and it keeps my OCD under control, i HAVE to be doing something

I always thought it was social media that was addictive. I stopped posting on there about a year ago, bit still foind my self endlessly refreshing the screen, not consciously, jist in a vegatative state i guess.
I have since deleted all my social media, and im on my phone way less, but i constantly find myself picking my phone up, even though theres absolutly nothing to do on it. I jist check my email or some other pointless task.
I dont miss social media at all, i have no fear of missing out. Its jist so strange that the urge to look at my phone can be satisfied by just picking it up and unlocking it.
Ive never had an adiction to my phone, i just feel like it wastes time unnessisary, or i use it as an excuse to not do things i need to. I have no idea how bad it will be for children growing up. It genuinly scares me.

Like the kids nowadays, jilted generation, rarely do anything other than go on social media, fall out and go out now and again. No hobbies, that's a major problem for me
Don't do face ache or much more than on here. My Mrs goes on Facebook now and again, tells me about people positing pictures of where they are, what they are eating, probably ****ting lol. I think of it like this, if they were truly happy they would not have to tell the world the boring ****s, they would just get on with it ffs
Like I said, can't be good on the mental health, as well as all the falling out, my life is better than yours, cause it is, that's why you need to tell everybody, ****ing losers
I'm quite happy doing my own things. I guess like most things, it's finding a balance and more importantly been aware that there is more things to do than sit on a sofa and go on face ache! As a kid I was fishing nuts, all the time, couple this with gyms and other fitness stuff In-between I did not have a minute and that's pretty much how I have lived my life, always doing something and hate been in the house. Been fishing early this morning, home for just after 12, watched the bike racing, cleaned and polished my bike, cut the lawns and watched the England match. Tomorrow night after work is already planned, a workout, cut the front hedges, Tuesday, off to do some swim preparation, bait up and have a nosy. Wednesday another workout and I might go out on my motorbike. Thursday off to bait up and have a nosy, will probably go out on my mountain bike for 2 or 3 hours on either Thursday or Friday night, might go for a pint Friday night. Saturday and Sunday mornings fishing, 4.30 am until 12pm. Bite time is around 7 - 11 and I cannot see the point in sat around for the sake of it, off to do other things
Variety is the spice of life, you can either aim for a vindaloo or settle for a Greg's pasty
I always have to be on with something and it changes all the time

The press will tell you that the teens are all out spreading covid . Swearing at old folk and littering.
They will also tell you that they are glued to their screens 24/7 and never leave the house.
Which is it?
In my experience the older people are the ones all over facebook and forums. Teens moved on years ago.

Funnily enough a read an article a while ago about what old people do on the internet. And it said you know you're old of you're still using facebook
apparenlty young people dont use it, it's really unfashionable and jist for old people. As for forums, i doubt anyone under the age of 40 even knows what a forum is
im not sure what it is that young people do on the internet though?
My experience is the same as yours though, the most internet/social media addicted people i come across are usually middle aged women. They want to post their whole life online, what theyre eating etc. Perhaps its something to fo woth being unhappy in real life.

Good point,I looked last week on my doom bringer/portable liar machine, and realised I needed to cut down on its use..
I have virtually stopped watching the government controlled news,on the TV,as its fearmongering based on a very big lie and overreaction..in fact I really don't watch TV now at all,a bit of YouTube if I want to gen up on history etc,or something that educates me..tbh I would be happy ,not a bit bothered to get that big 42 inch propaganda bringer out of my house, only my wife likes Midsomer murders..
I detest Facebook,twitter..etc,only thing I post on is on here, and I really must cut down on it....
I have numerous other interests, Calisthenics, cycling, fishing, fishing and a bit more fishing, and bushcraft, survivalist...knowledge,...all those hobbies keep me nicely away from fearmongered, brainwashed face nappy wearers..

Not to mention being chairman of the Wicker Man Weaving Committee, busy chap.
So will this summer's city dwelling visitors be welcomed with sharpened pitchforks like last year, or with a warm embrace and an invitation to cast off their masks, before being ushered into the local pub where they'll be charged twelve quid for a microwaved Ginster's?

I think my screen time is something like 1 hour per day. Here are some ways you can limit your social media screen time: 1) find a hobby that won't distract you 2) try to work on a project (I work with the guys from https://translationreport.com/legal-translation-services), or at a job 3) exercise 4) meet people

I think thats far easier said than done. The way social media is marketed to manipulate you, i think it is an addiction for many people.
Stand and talk to people, and when you hear their phone vibrate, you can tell they want to check it. People get itchy, they need that fix. 99% of the time they wont just get their phone out and check what it is, they will unlock the phone amd have a quick scroll. Its so common amongst people now, its not even considered rude, its just what people do.
You only have to sit and watch a family have a meal out in weatherspoons to see what social media is doing to people.

I'm obsessed at present especially when working away, I've deleted insta in the past no problem, when I last deleted Facebook I found it hard as I advertise my business on there and regularly scroll through marketplace.

Mine is over 5hrs per day on my phone, and I work from home on the computer and use educational resources like https://writinguniverse.com/essay-outline/ so I can add several more hours if I take that into consideration. It shocks me actually, as I always think that I don't have time to do certain things, but perhaps if I managed my time better and stopped going on my phone when I'm meant to be working, the work would get done quicker, and I'd have plenty of time for everything I wanted to do.
