Any of you trangia users get soot on the pans when using meth's in the burner? I've been told watering the fuel down will stop it. Any advice? Ta.

Adding a bit of water to the meths will reduce the soot but not stop it altogether

Add 10% water. I used to, but haven't bothered for years. I just don't seem to get soot on the bottom of my pans and if I do, it's nothing. In theory, the laps on my trousers should be black and minging looking like something Oliver Twist would wear covered in soot with resting my mess tin or pan on my leg as I eat my meals but their not.
Maybe there is different types of meths around and some soot and some don't. I know the EU had something to do with altering the formulation of meths a few years back but cannot recall what the new regulations were for its composition.
I stick to the Bartoline brand as it is the cheapest that I have found.

Further to the last post weigh your meths and make a note of the weight. Decant it into a fuel bottle add 10% of the meths weight in water.
Then you have a fuel bottle mixed and ready for use.
I used to use meths in winter. Though bought the gas burner for the stove years back and tend to use it all the time.

I use it straight,I use two Trangias,one for carping ,avatar,and a mini for stealth camping ,ie getting as far away from mankind for a bit,for a few hours..
I use em all the time,it does work putting water in the meths,but it's easy to over dilute it,and sure as he'll,in the winter, you will have trouble lighting your burner,even if you ,use the lip to start it off with..
I had the gas burner,not the tranny one,a go system one ,it's dangerous,especially if you use the long gas cannister cans and a adapter, it won't work unless you stand those long cans upright,and they'll topple real easy,nah....its binned,I've still got my eyebrows..

Using meths in Winter is simple in any type of spirit burner like a Trangia, use a preheater. They are expensive to buy for what they are, Trangia sell them for Winter use. I just use the lid off a small shoe polish tin, put a small piece of woodchip or tissue paper in it, put one or two drops of meths on top of the combustible material and light it and put it underneath the Trangia burner, within a minute or less, your Trangia will be blazing away ready to cook on. Usually it will light itself from the preheater or you may have to light it yourself.
Depending on the ground outside the bivvy, its possible to just put a bit of tissue paper with a couple of drops of meths on and light it under the burner instead of using the tin lid.
Warning, do not put more than a drop or two of meths in the preheater, you need it to just warm up the spirit burner and then burn out quick, if it burns for any longer, your spirit burner will be like a jet engine on reheat as the meths starts to boil..
Usually Trangia preheater are on Ebay but I cannot see them, but they are up for sale elsewhere for around £9, but its a lot of money for almost a tin lid.
Also in Winter, another way is to just drop a piece of tissue paper into the burner that has been dipped in the meths and lit. But it is slower to get the burner going than using a preheater.
Also, the tall thin gas bottles in Winter, I stand them in a small bait bucket filled with pond water. The water may be very cold almost freezing, but it is still warm enough to stop the gas bottle freezing up and it works perfect. Also if you keep the bait bucket filled with water inside your bivvy for the duration of your fishing session, it will be even warmer slightly when you come to use it.
Even laying the bottle on its side next to the burner and a few inches away and below the burner will keep it warm once the burner gets going and just keep checking it that it does not get to hot which it never does.
