On youtube,just finished watching this young guy,catching Walleye,on a frozen lake,he's got a pop up shelter,cot..bedchair,heater...built in flooring..the works..I have just commented,saying have you considered using carp fishing alarms,...or maybe they do that already..

Very common in the States. - you'll find hundreds if not thousands of videos on it. 'Nattie Up North' is a good channel - girls go ice fishing... pretty good at it they are too.

Three times now I have done it when on holiday visiting relatives in North America. That's ice fishing for Walleye, Pike , Musky and even Pan Fish and Crappies - it all seemed like noddy fishing to begin with - rods 2 foot long and jigging through holes cut out of the ice by petrol powered augers... but good grief it was very productive and mega fun. No fish weighed, but had pike to I guess mid 20's, a few decent Walleye and even caught a 44" muskie doing it. They spend a fortune on gear, way more kit than we use carp fishing - massively popular too. Carp by the way are usually crossbow fodder I'm afraid.
As for catching carp through ice - I am sure many of us have. Albeit you need to break the ice first. Last year I smashed the ice to give myself a small bit of water to place baits - had two that day fishing just on the edge of where I'd cleared the ice.

Have now caught lots of carp,lure fishing,mainly yellowswirl tails..
Best is an 18lb black koi...on a whychwood agitator and 5lbs line..
Got given a fantastic present by someone on here,lots of lures,a lifetimes worth,they are now part of my EDCpack.....

Not tried ice fishing proper although I vaguely remember river piking in my youth and catching by casting into marginal areas of cat ice. Those yellow swirl tails were good for bream IIRC . Had a couple of canal carp on an ultralight setup.. one on a micro fry out of a lock by the gtates and another on a cray..really slammed it hard! Proves how diverse and predatory they can be...

Fred J Taylor mentions ice fishing in the States in a couple of his books. I always found it fascinating, sitting in a shed on the ice, a tiny fire being more than adequate for heat and the hole being like a window to the fish. I'd love to try it.

Closest I've come was on a canal style lake at Partridge lakes.
It was totally solid...so instead of going home (like we should have) Me and my mate got the bailiff to come down and cut us 2 swims out with a chainsaw on a pole and a bobcat digger.
Sat there all day pole fishing very delicately.....and never had a touch....and went home
