What makes you pick between a good fishmeal boilie and a good nut based boilie for your fishing?
Venue specific? confidence? FLAA/nutrition perspective? Do you see one as more instant? maybe just prefer the smell of one.
What pointers are out there to help make a reasonably informed decision between the two?
Cheers, Merv

All of those.
But I'm happy to admit that sometimes it's just because sometimes I fancy a change. It's got nothing to do with the fish. I just want to be around a different smell for a bit.

I can tell you that you are not the only one, sometimes I just want a change of smell, I can only take some smells (garlic for instance) for so long, other times I just want to try something else, usually something new to get my own view on ingredients.
But I do know some lakes that definitely seem to respond to certain types of bait more than others, but to complicate things this can change over time, just to keep us on our toes.

I don't choose. I'm baiting up with a mix of 2 type of boilies and different diameters.

i use both types at the same time.

I prefer to use a fishmeal, or meat derived bait as I think the protein utilisation is better. To me, most vegetable (or nut) proteins are short of one or two of the required essential amino acids.
Tbh I much prefer a good fish meal and in my experience no matter what lake you go to a fishmeal will out fish a nut boilie, I will use a nut one now and then if I fancy a change for a session but 99% of my fishing is done with a fishmeal all year round including the winter months, most fish are brought up on decent fishmeal pellets so makes sense to use a fishmeal boilie

Utter rubbish. Some lakes definitely respond better to a nut
bait and vice versa

I've always tried both when starting on a new lake. Some lakes show a definite preference for one over the other. Hungry fish will eat whatever's put in front of them . Most of the lakes I fish are heavily pressured and the fish have seen it all. Fishmeal is better for me.

Hi rich. I'm afraid I can't agree with that either. I fish some tricky waters, for pressured fish. They have seen every bait and rig you could ever think of. A few years back one of the members on one of these waters started to sell a nut bait. It really wasn't anything special ingredients wise by all accounts. A simple cheap nut mix. I remember it being sold but stupidly I didn't get on it myself. Anyway for a couple of seasons it out fished everything, and I do mean everything else that went in that water. This is a water where I'd say pretty much every member is using quality bait. If those fish had preferred a decent fishmeal, believe me they could easily have had their fill of them, but for whatever reason, whilst that guy was selling that nut mix it was king.

If he would sell another bait, that bait could be successful as well.
Some waters get dominated by 1 bait because that bait is used in large quantity.
A couple of years ago, my local water was dominated by a robin red garlic fish bait only because lots of it went in. A group of anglers bought yearly 1000kg of that bait. So, i assume it's safe to say most carp accepted it as a 'food source'.
This phenomenon could also be explain the succes of some commercial baits such like cell from mainline and krill from sticky

Richworths were better back in the Pruteen days, but many lakes got taken apart by them fished up against “proper” Milks and fish meals. Although it helps if you can bait up by boat!

It is just something I honestly believe, my friend can't stand the fish smell so for years has only used a nut base boilie and for years I have out fished him on almost every session, infact without sounding like a dick which I'm really not ive properly caught more than double than him and we often fish together, same swims/ different swims it doesn't matter, might just be the lakes we fish up and down the country but it's my opinion and a few others that's all. Maybe in time I'll go to a different lake somewhere else and be proven wrong I've always got a open mind on all things fishy lol
