I saw someone upload a pic of a "ghost carp" on Facebook. If they hadn't labeled it ghost carp I would of thought it was a common. How do you tell the difference please? I'm still relatively new to carp fishing..

The colouration is different. Google images of them to get a better understanding. You can get ghost mirrors too btw

Common Carp, Mirror Carp , Leather Carp, Ghost Carp, Koi Carp....all are the same species so I really don't understand some of the snobbery when an angler catches a Koi or a pond owner 'only' has mirrors (not calling the OP a snob)
to be honest I am happy to catch any carp and don't need to find a 'label' for it (and my pond has nearly all the above other than a leather) 
It's just like some breeds of dog can vary quite a lot in colour, build and temperament... for example Labradors. Different traits are in different blood lines but still all the same species at the end of the day
So to answer the OP (well sort of), if you can't see the difference then does it matter?

A Ghost carp is just one that has a touch of ornamental in it in my opinion, and some of them are actually quite nice to catch.

The first places to look are the top of the head and the pecs, sometimes there is milky looking patches on the head and the pecs are lighter in colour. Ghosties are a cross between either commons or mirrors with koi so sometimes the markings can be hardly noticeable, although once you have seen a few it does become easier to tell.

Sometimes it's obvious, the fish on the left is an example of the type of Ghosties that are in the Linear lakes for example, you can't mistake them

Indeed he did
and my answer still stands...if you can't tell the difference then does it matter? They are all still Cyprus Carpio and the beauty of the fish is in the eye of the person holding it

Using your own analogy of dogs, people who pet them often ask 'what are they' and just answering 'it's a dog' often isn't a sufficient answer
