Following on from the recent post about Magnets & scales, it got me thinking...
I use a small carryall for all my 'Tech' i.e Camera,Powerpack,Bivvy light.. etc.
Now the Bivvylight has quite a strong magnet & I also have a couple of magnetic bivvy hooks for my head torch etc.
Am I going to damage the memory card in my camera by having all this in the same bag over time or not?
The Camera is still in its own case.

A powerful magnet will definitely damage a memory card or hard drive if it gets close enough. Depends on the device an d the magnet.

I always carry my bivvy magnets with my leads in a bucket

Put them in a different bag or a bait bucket. Don't take a chance with SD Cards etc.

I'd agree with that, sd card is digital data, wouldn't have thought a magnet would do anything

Me personally if I had a strong magnet I wouldn't leave it with an SD card, electronic devices, bank card etc. It's not worth the hassle if something does happen.
I Understand magnets shouldn't affect SD cards but I still wouldn't leave them next to a strong magnet

Flash memory uses floating gate transistors and not the magnetic method used by hard drives.
SanDisk say their cards can withstand a magnetic field of 5000 Gauss which is a lot, a standard fridge door magnet is around 100 gauss

The screens are the potential problem, I don't think they affect memory cards at all. Might test it with an old card and the magnet I use for work, 17kgs pull so pretty powerful. I would try with 2 but the impact would definitely kill it 
I do remember a plumber killing one of the early iPhone when he put the magnet out of a central heating filter on top of it, so it certainly was an issue in the recent past
