Looking for a bit of advice on braid for surface fishing, have used plenty of different braids over the years, but they have normally been thick old rope for long tows on snaggy waters or semi buoyant long distance casting braids.. any advice for something that may be a bit more suitable with a bit more finesse? And what breaking strain. Will be used fishing for some big old carp in a pretty weedy water so has to be robust to a certain degree.

Power pro a decent bet mate, i think its the moss green 20lb version i use which was chosen for diameter opposed to breaking strain as i didn't want it cheesewire thin bit its coped beautifully with fish to upper 30s from some very weedy waters. Its supple enough that i can flick the smallest korda in line controller 40yards.

Ive used berkley whiplash in 30lb, it floats well, picks of the surface very eaay on the strike, as with all braids they break well under the stated the 30 breaks at 17lb which is obviously well strong enough. Ive had the same braid on for 15 years as it doesnt degrade. After a few uses the waxy finish comes off and it is great thereafter. The only thing that caught me out initially is that the way i fish with it the hook snags on lilies tree leaves etc the jolting to get it loose can make a grinner knot slip so i tie a granny on the tag end.

I use J braid in the 30lb .20 I think it is. Picks up quick as far as I am concerned but I have only used PP before so not much to go on. I don't use a “carp” rod but a 10ft 60g lure rod which is quite quick so helps again on the pick up.

I'm not a braid user but floater fish most of the year so interested in any improvements I can make.
Over the years I've tried different things and sometimes experienced aborted takes if anything is visible, be it hook or line.
How do you guys get on with braid visibility?

You do get more fish shy away if much braid is on the surface, i will always try and hang the bait off of something. Most of my fishing is around snags so the braid is needed for its stopping power, as with most fishing if you can get them really preoccupied then its not as much of a problem. I tend to try and get the braid so that the fish approach 180 degrees from the line as the carp cant see directly in front of them, (easier said than done).

Cool, a few worth looking at then. I use braid quiet a bit for long trotting on the rivers, like how quickly it picks up off the surface more than anything, I'll have a look into some of these, guru one sounds interesting. Use whiplash a lot for distance spodding aswell so have some spare at home might be worth a go for the time being.

Thanks Dave. That ties in with my experiences years ago. I did use braid for a while and as you say it's ideal close to snags or a big carp sticking its head out of the reeds ( especially at 180 deg). That was many years ago and maybe braids have changed a bit but at that time, mine seemed far too visible when the carp were feeding in the open. It was that visibility that really drove me to change to mono-copolymer or fluoro , which on average seems to work better for me.
Now if there was an invisible braid I would be very interested.
