Question, is using a standard high end big pit for spodding a bad idea? Is chucking them big spombs repeatedly likely to cause some damage and would i be better purchasing a reel specifically for the job?

Would probably be fine but a shame to give a high end reel such a battering. You'd be better off with an old emblem or aerlex. No need to spend a fortune and the older tells tend to be a bit more robust I find.

I bought a spare spool for my fx9 and loaded it with braid.
Does the job fine for spoding.
Probably wouldn't do it on an expensive reel mind you

I found the older black and gold Shimano Aerlex 8000 takes plenty of abuse. Mine is around 15 years old, has been covered in groundbait, spod mix, and mud and is still going strong.
I had 5 of them, used them for my fishing rods, marker and spod reels. The 2 on my marker and spod/Spomb are still in use.
More recent Shimano reels don't seem to have such a good longevity.

I have a shimano Aerlex xtb can get them for about £60 got it on my freespirit spod rod, honestly can't go wrong with that reel mate a real work horse and definitely withstanded a lot of punishment plus looks the part aswell
