Been offered a set of the shimano st 10000 ra older version with silver spool. Are these decent reels? Had the similar shimano aero growing up (borrowed off old man) and always found them decent. They'll mainly be for canal work and a small local pond less than 2 acres.

One of my 1st reels and 20 years on I still have one and it works. I personally don't like a bait runner but that is my only gripe with it and is a personal preference. A very solid bargain priced reel imho

I'm not a massive fan of them either but can't find a small decent sized front drag reel reasonably priced as it's not going to be my go to reel I don't want to spunk loads of cash on it

I don't think mechanically the sts (which I'm sure ain't that old) are quite on par with the likes of 8010gts or 8000 Aeros or xteas, all of which I still use regularly. But I do have one and they're a capable little reel. I love a baitrunner, have 10/12 of the 8000 sized Shimanos that I use on different light rods and pike gear. They've a smooth drag, nice line lay and have the baitrunner system, what's not to like.

Do you think I'm better off looking for a set of the very old school 8000 Aeros then? There's a few on Ebay but they're going for a similar price to the St's around 70 for 2. Some are going for more.

The baitrunner mechanism is exactly the same as the older ones and mechanically they're not bad at all, the only real difference if i remember rightly is the oscillation is controlled by an elliptical gear opposed to a wormshaft. They share the same bearings as previous aero techniums etc and theres very little to go wrong in them to be honest.

Interesting to know, just made me wonder as the sts around 50 quid new yet the 8010 gts and 8000 Aeros were around a ton.....20 years ago.

I would imagine the efficiency of manufacture has probably bought the price down a lot mate and all them years back the gts and aeros were top of the range from a fairly limited market but now they are a less popular style of reel with the masses which is a shame as they're probably about the right size for 90% of most peoples fishing. The wormshaft and fittings are a lot more expensive to manufacture too in addition to the Graphite bodys that are at the cheaper end of the market it seems. Whether they will last as long as the older generations I can't say but they're still solid little reels with unquestionably the best baitrunner mechanism out there.

I must admit that I like them, got 3 of the xta big bait runners too which go on my torrix for ‘proper' fishing. 90% of my angling is with the 8000s though.
The way I see it if you can only afford one set, big pits are probably the way forward but I hate using stuff like that on little lakes

I know what you mean mate, always feels like an overkill. I used to love the old aerlex rear drags, they were a superb size almost in between a big pit and bait runner shame they don't make them anymore.

Something bullet proof. As Im eyeing up some penns for cat fishing too. I also inherited a single shimano Oc 8000 bait runner as mistake from a very large well known tackle shop.
I've got a set of big pits sonic they're fairly decent they'll do me another season Atleast haven't had any problems with them - then I'll look at getting some top of the range reels. The old model 4000/6010 Aero Gte's were around £100 from memory, lovely reels, built to last, but were slightly smaller than the current 10000 size reels.
The current ST range seem more plasticky, and not as rugged, but I think better value than the DL10000's which I made the mistake of buying. I seriously wish I my older 4000/6010's had not been stolen, I would have gone back to them. The only reason for buying the DL's was two spools compared to one for the ST.
The baitrunner system is still top dog, but as I said, reel quality does not seem as good in my opinion as the original Baitrunners were.

I've came across some 6500b for what seems like a bargain price I think they're very good reels by the price they're going for considering the age so hopefully these come through
