The nylock nut on a Minn Kota Endurance 38lb thrust is 12.5mm. I can't see this being different on the 55lb TBH.

Beware though that most technical companies in the US use a mixture of metric and Inches (or fractions thereof).. So I reckon that your nut could be a half inch size.

If you need the tread type I would have to take it off to check. I doubt it would be BSF, BSW or any of the British standards as the US don't recognise anything they haven't invented, so UNF, UNC or metric is probable.

From neil's measurement 12.5mm it is likely to be 1/2" (12.7mm) unc or unf c is coarse and f is fine, you are unlucky that it is 1/2" as unc is very similar to bsw except in 1/2" as unc has an extra tooth per inch of thread.

To look at there is a notable difference between unc and unf, unc looks very similar to whitworth (bsw) and unf is noticeably finer

1min14 in shows 1/2 spanner

1min 21 1/2 inch ratchet

I would say thread is 3/8 unc

1/2 across flats would be 5/16 thread very similar to 8 mm nut which is 13 mm a/flats
5/16 UNC is 18 threads per inch
5/16 UNF is 24 tpi

I wrongly assumed he was measuring the diameter of the threaded part and not across the flats of the spanner used.

I think we have the common consensus between us that:

The nut size across the flat and therefore spanner size to get it off is 1/2 inch ( sorry if I didn't make that plain).

The thread if you wish to get a replacement nut is most likely to be 5/16th UNF or UNC ( although never rule out metric) As has been said you can work it out by looking at it but if you're not sure an engineering outlet will tell you at a glance.

FFS no one mention AF sizes or we are all doomed.
Are you sure?
