My wife is thinking about taking up metal detectoring...

If you do the beach download a yearly permit, it's free ..... hardest part is finding somewhere to detect, if you have a society near you it's worth joining as they have all the advice and organise hunts.... as stated old geezer is the fella on here

Wife,has chance of permission on WW2 defunct target range behind our house,so,she needs to find the best,lightest detector for all round metals I guess..
I found loads of ordance,tank tracks when I was younger.
My Mrs says,not worried about price of detector, but which model,etc....I have no idea, ask me about Otters,Mitchell's and carping I can give a answer,but don't know bugger all about detectors,rules...and so on...

goldenmask1+ probably best bang for buck, easy to use for beginners and wont need to upgrade. alot people speak highly of the simplex but ive not used it myself. alot of people advise ace250 for beginners but this is terrible advice, ignore that.
get permission from landowner, look up treasure laws. avoid schedule monuments.
youll need a mini shovel, draper or roughneck are good. some kind of pouch to keep finds in, i use esp baitpouch. a pinpointer helps speed up retrieval of the find in the hole, therefore more dug signals in a day. pair of neoprene gloves. headphones although not essential to begin
keep coil flat on the ground, swing about 2/3 seconds from side to side. walk slowly. get to know your machine. stick to cleaner signals, try and avoid iron. 90% of what you did will probably be trash.

online research or map studies help find good areas, but could be anything anywhere, thats the fun.
on quiet clean ground want high sensitivity for good depth, on really busy ground drop sensitivity to not overload the machine.
like a roman settlement may have 500 years of ironworking, daily fires, iron nails rusted away into the ground etc, this makes the field very mineralised/noisy so the machine needs to be ground balanced out to pick out the goodies(non ferrous) amongst the trash. think of it like low beam in a car sees through the fog.
finding unknown settlements via map studies/google earth/pure luck is good buzz. pm me for some online resources or any specifics if you like

If your looking for a top end extremely light detector then go for the XP Deus ,
after that look at the Minelab machines , I personally have the E-Trac another top end machine ,IMO better than the Deus but a lot heavier .
Their are many machine out their but those two IMO are the best,
