Well. All I can say is that a viable, cheap, workable alternative needs to be available else that deadline won't work.

Be interesting to see how it works for people who go from one end of the country to the other for work
Costs for customers will go up to male allowances for 4 or 5 stops to charge the car batteries.
It's unworkable imo until they get batteries that can go the whole length of the country on a single charge

i'm in support of it but there is a huge amount to be done in terms of price, infrastructure etc.
currently the price of the cars is prohibitive, there's a huge disparity in the cost of electricity from public charge points compared to those who are lucky enough to be able to charge at home. then there's the issue of the disposal of the batteries which simply creates a new environmental problem.
but...
the big manufacturers and energy companies seem to be making their move and if we don't all change our thinking then the planet is screwed.
the right brains and the right joined up thinking applied to it could make the difference... hopefully

It's all well and good but what about the environmental impact on making the vehicles in the first place. Surely it would take tens of years if not hundreds of years to balance this out. Make public transport quicker less crowded and cheaper and more people would use it not just for travling to work but at weekends aswell with the family.

Why don't the government if they are serious about this give builders a incentive to put a charging point in every single new build house ?
It's more difficult to do with flats but it's a start 👍👎

When I first started using Stainless Steel around 25 years ago, there was a guy who was a bit of a boffin who worked at Blackburn Tek , who picked up stainless tubing for a project he was working on.
He converted a Peugeot 205 to run on Hydrogen (Water!) Got 70 miles off memory from a tank full, it started up on Petrol the spare electric current went into the 2nd sealed Water Tank via Electrodes I presume, osmosis started gas pressure built up, was directed down a 2nd Fuel line to a Butterfly valve, it flicked over from Petrol to Hydrogen – that simple! When it ran out of Hydrogen it automatically flicked back to Petrol.
There's an Island in Scotland where all the Cars where made by a student, run on Hydrogen, because he “Gave them away” not sold them, he can't be stopped by one of the big Car makers who own the Patent on guess what – Hydrogen Engine!

How are cars going to be charged if you haven't got a drive or you live in a tower block ??? In Paris a couple of years ago, I saw streets with charging points at the parking meters so you could park and charge at the same time

That's a major part of the problem Jim.
My local supermarket has a row of spaces with chargers but the difference in cost for electricity compared to your home supply is huge.
But we have to try something. I'm hopeful. Look at how phones have developed over the last 15 years. If there's money to be made then someone will find solutions

Hydrogen is the way I reckon.... there's a station up near Milton Keynes that makes its own Hydrogen by drawing the moisture out of the air and converting it, ready to use there, no tankers required and only water emitted

I think people are looking at this in a narrow way, which is the norm In this country it seems lately.
You have to look at electric cars IN conjunction with autonomous driving systems. When you get home, send the vehicle to a charging station and order it back at the time you require it. You could rent it out whilst your not using it, Uber style without a driver. Investment and imagination from probably the Japanese, German's or USA will no doubt conquer the issues.

I read somewhere once about farmers being able to run vehicles on the methane created from dung. Maybe an urban myth. Pity as there's always plenty of bulls*** to go around

Well if you are to believe the environmentalists then cows/sheep are the cause of global warming so maybe there could be a way to convert the methane.
