Covid is just like any other respiratory virus, they mutate to survive.
When flu mutates (just had a read
) it goes through an Antigenic Shift when a host is infected with two strains which create a new variant though with Covid it's different hence here we are.

I guess the problem these days we have a larger aging population to look after where these viruses seem to be the biggest challenge.
I always wonder though if a variant was more challenging to the under 40s would would governments be as strict as they have been, lockdowns etc.

The virus doesn't really care how potent it is; all it wants to do is survive. The Omicron variant has been spectacularly successful at doing this, as evidenced by the record numbers of new infections. Luckily (for most people) it's proven to be less deadly but the number of people being hospitalised and dying is still at unacceptable levels, which would always be the case with an exponential rise in case numbers.
What is of greatest concern is that a new variant emerges - which could occur for any number of reasons - that is more deadly, or is better equipped to evade the existing vaccines. With case numbers so high, testing capacity absolutely maxxed out, people not self isolating (for a variety of reasons), poor ventilation in schools and workplaces, etc. then theres every chance that something worse could come along. The idea that it will continue to get weaker each time a new variant appears isn't something I'd be hugely confident in, personally.

How do you know that the Torries have a plan to run the 'holy' NHS the way the Americans do, do you have documents to support such a bold claim, or is this all in your head, which is it?
Just going by again what you're claiming, that being that the NHS "is on the edge of collapse", would you not agree that over population, specifically immigration either legal or illegal needs to be halted to ease the burden on resources as apposed to pumping money into a black hole like the NHS has become with an ever increasing burden made upon it?

It's been proven that natural immunity is far superior to these trial drugs simply because with natural immunity you get the full virus which your T cells are then programmed to respond to the virus when it next detects it, unlike the trial drug whereby you only get a very small portion of the virus, hence limited/rapidly waining Immunity.

When you have 2,000 people a day being hospitalised, whether it's "endemic" or not, measures need to be put in place. You may personally not give a flying **** about anyone else, but the simple fact is that our health service is teetering on the edge of collapse, for a variety of reasons, and ultimately, that will impact everyone.
As we all know, the Tories are doing their utmost to run the system ragged and then justify their move towards privatisation and a US style health service that causes in excess of half a million bankruptcies a year. That'll be you, your parents, or your kids, one day - and all because you want to flex on the internet, complain about masks and are petrified of a tiny needle.
Whilst we continue to have a significant portion of air heads in our midst - and I am talking globally, not just in the UK, though by god we seem to have way more than our fair share - then we continue to provide the opportunity for the virus to mutate, and it will continue to do so until people either come to their senses or are simply struck down and killed by it; one way or another, the number of vaccinated people will increase, the likelihood of nasty mutations will decrease, and we might one day get back to the sort of normality that everyone craves.

Mutation is just errors in Genetic code during replication. It is not true that viruses always mutate to become less dangerous, but delta replicated in the lungs, omicron replicates in the throat, roughly 70x faster than delta, so I would think it is logical that it will not mutate to go back to a lung based virus. It was the lungs issue that made it so deadly.
I am of a growing opinion that Omicron was developed in the lab in China to outstrip delta and put an end to the pandemic. They have data to suggest it evolved from the original virus, went missing for 18 months and then appeared, and resembles a virus that mutated in mice. They use mice in labs ffs.
