In all honesty, I really don't know the absolute details, I can find out.
I'd very much doubt it would be Gary closing anything down as he's a maverick renegade, more than likely it's the RSPB. He could have been spied up by a bird watcher from the hide on the 3rd and passed onto the RSPB, again, I don't know the exact details of what went on other than Oz cocked things up from what I've been told by stand up guys that were fishing the place at the time. By the way, Oz fished that Swim X for over a month and a half when he was was on there.

In my eyes Pete Springate is still up there with the best, not chasing monsters but fishes purely for himself and still likes to explore places unknown to many and relishes the buity of his surroundings and very knowledgeable of the wildlife around him.

Fair point. When you hear the same thing from multiple blokes fishing the place, it's the only conclusion you can come to until you hear differently, I think that's fair to say that, I'll happily make the apologies if it's not true. Now it could be a case of blokes not liking him for whatever reason, or just simply made up nonsense, the easiest way to find out either way is to phone Gary himself.

The rspb closed the X due to ground nesting birds, it wasn't the only swim lost that year. certain swims on here are only fishable at certain times of the year and the X was one of them

Just like to clarify a few points raised on this thread, one that was bought to my attention by a mate just the other day who thought I may like to take a look! It seems a member on the forum has questioned my integrity whilst angling on Ferry Lagoon using hearsay to make some sort of point, and also bought Gary Bayes name into the thread and so after speaking with Gary earlier I will make a few points in reply if I may.
1. I never fished in, let alone was either seen or caught walking around in the out of bounds/spawning bay/mere on Ferry.
2. I fished the X swim for 2 nights, weeks after it was opened for fishing that year (in July as stated in the rules) and spent a further 6 nights over a period of a few weeks on the straight bank leading up to the X swim which is also allowed between July - September). Most of the other syndicate members spent time on this bank during that period like you would! I certainly did not fish a month and a half in the X swim although there is nothing to say you couldn't do that even if you had the time (I don't)!
3. I often spoke to many of the rangers who were working the protected site during this period and they were always helpful and informative of their plans for the reserve but never had an issue with us being in the area during the summer. The other members who were fishing that year were mainly good friends of mine or even close mates, so I'm not entirely sure where you are getting your hearsay from other than rumour or gossip-mongers with nothing better to do with time than drag others into negativity.
4. I spent the rest of my few sessions on the lake either on the Swavesey bank or at the other end of the lake once the drifting weed became too savage to have landed a carp safely.
5. The scrapes made in the meadows behind the X swim by the RSPB finally attracted some very rare ground nesting birds and despite some valiant efforts and meetings the area was deemed out of bounds late that autumn. Gary informed us that year at a show that we had lost these areas to the rare bird life turning up at last and there was nothing more he could do at the present time.
Hope that clears things up a bit.
Anyhow, enough of all that, I hope you are all having a great season and enjoying the fishing...if not out angling then enjoy the summer... it seems to be here at last!
