I work for an extrusion company. Tooling is not cheap, that will be at least 20k and plastic pellet has never been more expensive than it is at present, thanks to the oil price and energy costs. Then pop on your patent, your upfront royalty fee along with solicitors fees. You're easily into 5 figures before you start production. He will also have price breaks, the more they run, the less per 1000 he will pay. He's under a lot of pressure to ensure this sells.

I think an awful lot of money would go into Patent attorneys. 2 years development, and this is the best they could come up with, I'd bet they finished this design within 2 weeks, and the rest of the time was spent throwing bags of cash at the patent office.

Again, it's all relative. Five figures is expensive for a one man band trying to get a new product out. Zamora used to earn that a month and he's not even the money behind it.

TACKLE SHOPS ... it's evident that sadly there's a lot of people out there that can't see the issues with this product, many of which are inexperienced and taken in by Ali's marketing.

Any self respecting tackle company starting with Angling Direct should set a precedent and refuse to stock this product. Any of us that first saw pictures of it and understood how it worked could see all the potential problems. Sadly there are a lot of inexperienced anglers out there that just don't see the issues and will buy it .. Come on guys, find your morals and stop stocking it so that there's no potential of this being used on any fisheries??????

I cant believe no one's mentioned, in Ali's defence, the game changing bait screw with a hole in it, so you can tie a bait to the screw. Now thats finding a complicated solution to a problem that doesn't exist

Re: the comment on the patent costs...one could apply themselves and do it personally by following the application process but if one is to secure the services of an IP lawyer, then fairly pricey. Mediocre IP lawyers are pricey, half decent more so. Everything is billable and the process to gain a patent is lengthy. Can be in excess of a year.

I speak as being part of that sector (not intellectual property) but law generally.

Wasn't saying it has much going for it (on the contrary), just that the angle from which some suggest to ban the rake (automatic hooking) doesn't hold up.

Look, we on the continent have a different fishing culture, in over 40 years of fishing i've had my license checked twice, that's it. So the risk of this thing being used and thus abused here is way bigger. So i'm hoping that the uk anglers can get this thing cancelled, simple. In this day and age complaining seems to work best regardless of any laws, and this is my whole point, i don't see how the bylaw of automatic hooking could be used against it.
