The truth will come out eventually about Germany but I don't believe their figures for one minute are recorded the same as ours....i did read that they are recording only 100% pure Covid-19 deaths so if someone was in Hospital with something else and would have died anyway they will not record that as CV19 related, regardless whether they tested positive or not. Their death numbers are evidently those who were admitted to hospital with CV19 only and didn't leave.

Not sure about Germany, but one thing I do know is that they are super efficient at everything they do, their testing was on a different scale to all other European countries.
I think most people who have posted on this thread are on the same page and levels of common sense when talking about going fishing again, but HM Govt has to base things on the lowest common denominator ie the muppets we have roaming our streets.
We are still 15-20 days behind mainland Europe if you look at their peaks etc, so I would personally like to see restrictions lifted at the end of May, hopefully this will coincide with far fewer new infections and the release of the track and trace app.

There may also be regional differences, in my area cheshire and greater manchester there has been an increase in cases and before anyone says thats down to more testing well try telling the frontline staff that are seeing more cases admitted to hospitals and more local deaths than they have seen.
Some of the comments i have seen and read disgust me about people wanting to get back to normal they are either exceptionally selfish or have no idea what suffering the frontline staff have to endure just to make sure hospitals stay open.

So DIY outlets and garden centers is mitigating risk and looking at the bigger picture.

I think i read/heard somewhere recently that the North West were lagging up to 2 weeks behind other parts of the country (particularly London) and there was to be an expected increase in positive tests in the North West to come.

I don't think woody was saying that at all
playing devils advocate - there is an aspect of opening stores as part of the bigger picture in terms of the economics / employment etc.
I don't necessarily think bedding plants and shelving units are essential purchases, but if it's safely getting people back to work then there is a benefit. one could argue, a bigger one than reduced numbers of anglers on syndicate lakes...

I guess it's also worth remembering that this is a fishing forum, so percentage wise of course our passion for angling (no pun intended) is going to surface (and another) in much bigger numbers. If this was a site that just covered general issues / news etc. the cry for resuming fishing would be far reduced.

I don't believe it was covid-19 that was circulating in the UK in december, or if it was then it did so in a tiny fraction of the population. We didn't see mystery respiratory illnesses presenting to ICU, just the usual flu strains, and viral screens revealed just the usual culprits.
Of course it is not impossible that a less virulent or deadly strain was here that mutated, but that would then not be likely given the way that severe cases have presented across the world.
The illness' prior to the covid-19 pandemic were likely influenza cases or other coronaviruses (such as those causing the common cold) which always peak during the winter months.

I agree it wasn't here in December or else we would have seen a huge spike in the ICU admissions / care home deaths in mid-late Jan, especially with all the socialising that goes on over the festive period.
DIY stores were never on the stay shut list in the 1st place, just many made their own decision to shut. I'm assuming that garden centres are being allowed to open because the likes of B&Q who have in house garden centre's are open with social distancing being practiced. Many are open that sell fresh produce as well.
I imagine the roadmap Boris will spell out tomorrow will be similar to the one ROI has laid out, bearing in mind that they have had far fewer cases than the UK.

We haven't enforced the lock down hard enough here, as a key worker I'm a mobile service engineer keeping water treatment plants running and driving all over the South Coast and up as far as London. Every day I see joyrider out in fast cars and even supercars and motorbikes, fineing a few is pathetic, impound the vehicles and auction them off with proceeds to the NHS. Some may know I'm a biker but I hate seeing bikers out flouting the rules, only today one overtook me at stupid speed as I was about to turn right on a country road and I had indicated in plenty of time and slowed to under 10 mph.
