After seeing it... It is a sort of a freak accident something that doesnt happen often but that small mat didnt help at all especially not with what looked like well rested fish... doing it in water would save the day in this case... Have seen tail fins grow back nicely on some fish so maybe this one will get better with time as well.

Having re watched it again obviously the Matt is hidden by his retainer but does look like a stiff sided cradle and too small for a 50 tbh
If you slow down the playback speed in the YouTube app to 0.25 you can see quite clearly what happens
Looks like a soft walled cradle to me, similar to the trakker sanctuary mats.
And if im honest, doesnt look like its too small either. Badly positioned in the mat maybe. Looks like plenty of room at the head end.

Just watched it slowed down as suggested below. Nothing to do with the cradle by looks of it, would have happened on a flat mat the size of a football field. Appears the tail gets caught underneath it as he lowers it and thats what has caused the damage as it kicks it tail back in the other direction

It's not an unfortunate accident at all, it was completely avoidable, the fish shouldn't have been retained for as long as it was and should not have been taken out of the water.....if the angler had followed the rules it would not have happened, end of story.

He hasnt set out to do that, therefore its an accident. Should he have followed the rules, yes, wether you agree with them or not. Yes its avoidable, as are most accidents and im sure in hindsight, he would have approached it differently. But he hasnt done it on purpose has he.
How long was it retained for? Is that information available?
And if it had happened at a lake where it was within the rules to photograph fish on the bank?
