i think as anglers we do give them too much credit.
I would hate to think how much time we spend sat behind rods that aren't quite as perfectly "out there" as our minds eye depicts. that after all, eat, sh*t and sh*g.
That being said, they know exactly what their environment is like. bit like if someone suddenly changed your home about somehow, you'd soon notice.

My outlook now is enjoy my fishing, They are catchable. Sometimes we are our own worst enemy, or a marketing dream.
Keep it simple, find them, cast out/feed a proven bait, stay on them long enough for them to feed. Catch 'em.
That works
A strange one on Brackens was that for some rarely caught fish was a hookbait had to be left in place for 48hours. This tactic produced a couple of rarely caught 30's for me. The rod that was recast every day only produced a few high doubles and a low 20.
Yet on another session one fish was caught within minutes of casting in around 20 30boilie stringers. That same rod then produced a fish every night. Casting to the bar in front of Ants from Bridge. Think that was the session I got warned by the bailiff when he saw my throwing stick

I was walking round Taverham Mills one night when a tree fell in in a storm. By mid morning there were 4 carp 'playing' between the branches where the day previously no fish were present.

It's an accepted thing amongst quite a few fishery owners that a third of the stock will be regular visitors to the bank, a third caught more infrequently and a third caught hardly ever, if ever. Certainly seems to fit with my place.

I've heard a couple of people say that carp with the classic underslung mouth will get hooked less often, just the shape of the mouth meaning they get away with it more. Don't know if it's true, but might be something in it.

I'm sure some carp have unusual shaped mouths, either through genetics, or mouth damage at an early age. Some carp just have small or. Strangely shaped mouths. Then you may have carp that just have a preference for certain types of food, maybe they have genetic reasons for this. I can't smell certain smells. Fortunately for me they are mostly nasty smells; like vomit, excrement, rotten food. I can smell a person peeling an orange from 50ft away. Coffee, Bacon also. Tobacco is so repugnant to me the smell of it make me want to vomit. If humans can be so variable. Why can't Carp?.

You say that but I've personally never seen a carp fall for a fraudulent cold caller or buy fake goods by accident, fairly street smart tbh.
