Consensus is the key as you say. If you want to use wraps to inform other people EVERYONE has to use the same value. It seems 12 ft is the accepted length, its easy to wrap up at that length with any length of rod, you can usually find a spot to set up your sticks in or near your swim. If you can't do the sums in your head, use your phone, wraps to yards ×4, yards to wraps ÷4. My vote is for 12ft = 1wrap. Doesn't matter in the slightest how long your rod is.
If you use inches to measure your cock, whatever the length, an inch is still an inch and wrap is still a wrap.

I just looked that up, in yard terms I'm 0.33, but in wrap terms I'm 121

What do you when you can't walk back, say you have a swim that's in a small thicket, cast over thicket and unpick line from trees to your swim? Just use some banksticks if you don't want to buy purpose made distance sticks, saves so much agro...you'll thank me 👍'
Yea anything behind the swim can be a real pain, the worst one is one lake with swims that back on to the motorway, then you have to time your cast between the traffic and it can be quite dangerous!

I'm pretty sure the fish on the puddles I fish don't know a wrap from a yard from a rod length. I'll take their lead and cast to where I have seen them...

Not really, a wrap is 12' / 4 yards. That's how long the cord is on the ones I've seen/use. I only recently came back into fishing, wraps didn't exist when I packed in but I find them simply easier to use. No walking lines out, no casting out and taping/powergum on lines. Just stand there and wrap up to the required distance, it's so easy.

One trick if you want to be secret squirrel and put people off the scent of your hotspots is to put your sticks at 11ft, then if they sneakily watch you wrap up and count the wraps to make sure they can copy you, they will be a few yards out over any half decent distance.
You can also move someone's distance sticks when they're not looking to put them off their hotspot however be prepared for that to backfire when they unwittingly catch a monster just off their baited patch, without even knowing it!
