Not that much of a deterrent though is it, a fine of a few hundred quid. Should also have their tackle seized as a minimum in addition to the fine.

Yep. That would be a start. Lifetime bans too?
The commercial waters I fish ask for proof of current licence. Maybe more should be doing this?

Didn't know there was such a thing as a free water, surely all waters are owned by someone? And whoever owns them is going to charge you?

The Canals and some lakes no one comes round to ask for money no signs up either,I remember an ex girlfriend's mate her fella was a carper,he had all the gear and no license then a few times he asked if he could borrow mine,I even remember him packing up at a lake when the EA came down I was with my brother at the time and my ex's little lad and they guy couldn't get away quick enough

Weird, can perhaps understand some lake owners not collecting money, but I thought all canals and rivers were owned by the Canal & River Trust, who either rent them out to clubs or unrented stretches are covered in the Waterway Wanderers permit.

Quite possibly a number of park lakes are free, and most definitely stretches of river.
My local council has lakes on a couple of parks, there is no charge to fish them, although personally I think that a small day ticket fee should be charged.
Probably a few villages have local commons or greens with lakes that people fish, Chris Yates starter fishing

I done a night on a 50' Deep pit in my town centre and it's supposedly owned by a club which charge £50 a year but no one come round while I was there
