I can't understand the logic not using the sticks?
Surely if your fishing the same lake week in week out even just for reference for the trip your on, it's the easiest and most effective way to at least be in the right ball park features wise. I guess you could go back to counting reel handle turns walking them out but that's a pain in the arse on lakes with any degree of foliage or without straight banks.
Power gum slips all the time no matter what knot you use and I do use it myself every time I put more than one rod on a particular spot.
There was a few blokes over frogmore that used to put electrical tape tags on the barbed wire fence and walk there rods out, seemed a good idea, untill people starting moving them about.

Because fishing up against an island or something might be the furthest point in my water so can't cast past that, yeah I get walking it down the bank but unless you fish a featureless hole in the ground the banks are pretty full up with bushes/ trees and tbh that's much more hassle than going round distance sticks, it's takes 20/30 seconds to sort it out.
I get that's how you do it but like mentioned before me the peg way of doing it you get idiots moving them and the power gum moves, if you can't be bothered to use sticks then fine but don't put down people who do use the tools available to them just be use you don't want to, I have a friend who still does the peg way but we both fish waters without straight banks and lots of stuff in the way so he struggles to find a place to do it

Haven't used distance sticks, marker floats, stop knots, spombs, deepers, or in fact anything at all of that nature this year. In fact it's pretty rare that I will use any of them, and still manage to catch my share...

I also set my distance sticks not at 12ft. So my wraps never correspond with anyone else. Never know who has the binoculars out

I hardly ever use distance sticks, they have their uses, but if you watch others using them... they're not casting along the same line and often don't adjust for depth. Always amusing when they start baiting up with a catty or throwing stick - bait goes all over the show in most cases. Using a marker float, I can accurately put my rig and bait in the same place - with added bonus of knowing the depth and contours. Most of the chaps these days are like sheep, they all do the same thing and get the same results. Count me out of that.

How do you find your spot again with the marker float? It's fine if all 3 rods are at the same distance. But if not, how do you recast your marker float to the same spot to recast, or how do you find that spot again on a different session?

i have a reservoir at the bottom of my field.
On the far side of the reservoir, cattle come down to drink freely.
there was some numpty with his distance sticks at the side of his bivvy proudly set up.....mid morning, said numpty fast asleep, been drinking stella all night no doubt, and the cattle came wandering down.
after they had their water fill, they calmly wandered back past the "crap anglers" bivvy, only to stop and investigate his stupid sticks...one the cattle got its foot tangled up in the cord, started bucking and weaving, pulled noddy sticks out of the ground and went legging up the bank with legs and noddy sticks flying around everywhere.
the noddy woke up....and started to swear and shout at the cattle...

The reality is that walking out lines and clipping is the same as wrapping around sticks, but with more disadvantages. It takes longer, your line is on the floor, you have to find somewhere straight and clear enough to do it etc etc etc. If you're still walking out lines in the view that the old methods are still the best then more fool you.
You can't flick out a marker in the dark and cast and clip up to it with any accuracy, so that method is no good for anyone who can't arrive in daylight.
As for firing a laser gadget across the pond
Some people take great pride in the fact that they were around before things like distance sticks were released. They will take every opportunity to tell everyone with hilarious sarcastic quips like ‘how did we ever cope'
It takes no skill or aptitude to do something for a large number of years, it just happens. If you're doing something for a long time and not using newer and more sensible methods out of pride and to not look like a ‘noddy' you're a bit dim.

I saw one used ages ago. Pointed at a far margin, then distance sticks to clip up to the right distance and clipped the leaves first cast. I completely forgot about them untill you mentioned them.
Are they affordable now? Back then it wasn't cheap. And do they work against water. I.e can you point it at fizzing and get an accurate ish distance?

Quite easily!
I clip up the marker float, and have a far bank marker. If I need to recast the marker float, I cast and take the line out of the clip, pull an additional rod length of line out, and reclip. I can then pull back to the feature, allow the float back up, and recast to it.
If I fish the same swim again next session, I'm in the same ballpark with the line in clip already. As I also use a spod rod I often have as many as 3 marks in the clip on that rod as well for the same or different swims.
Easy enough to walk out or distance stick to those points, although I do prefer walking the line out, and I do use 'secret' marks, something like the end of the reedbed to the 2nd post on the sheep fence or from a particular tree to 'the dip' in the bank.
I have even been known to walk and wade baits out
Something else I do I learnt from Jim Gibbinson, for the same swim on another session, knowing how many baits on a stringer I can cast to that spot. So for example, the spot on one swim is 70metres, I can cast that far with a 3oz lead and a 7boilie stringer. If I use 5 I go past it, if I use 10 I am short.
