Ok. So if we are talking ‘names'
Terry is different class. He was catching fish when he was a postman, through dedication and the odd swerve. Long before full time and tackle/bait deals. I'd say he's probably the most complete carp angler of my generation. I've only ever met him briefly at shows as he's never fished any of the same waters as me, but I was left with the impression that's he's a throughly decent bloke and appears to either not realise how good he is, or has absolutely no ego. Number one for me.
I've met Adam Penning a few times and been to a couple of his slide shows. If you gat the opportunity to see one I really recommend it, throughly enjoyable couple of hours. They are never the usual turned up, caught this bore fest. Very thought provoking.
Ok controversially I'm gonna say Danny Fairbrass. Look past all the Korda haters and the “bosh” nonsense. That guy is a proper quality angler. He makes some pretty tricky venues look easy and has done for years. Frampton for example is no joke and he's getting multiple catches from there etc. I absolutely know that if I fished with him, even after thirty years, I'd learn something. Plus he gives a lot back and still gets a load of stick for it.
Damien Clarke. Understated but an absolute machine. When I speak to good anglers who have fished with him, they all say he's a bit special. That speaks volumes.
Lastly probably my favourite is Frank Warwick. Limited time. Amazing innovation. Quality angler. Got the balance right. Makes it look easy. Brutal caster for a smaller guy. The complete package and humble, and always willing to share info etc.

Steve Alcott and John holt. Caught most of the most desirable carp out there, don't need smoke blown up there arse to go and do it. Massively inspiring for me, in a day an age where people will hang themselves out to dry for a pack of free hooks or some cheap bait.

Remember when Oz Holness used to be one of those anti media underground carpers. What on earth happened to him the last few years? Hes turned into everything he used to be against.

Absolutely mate. Top angler can mean different things to different people. They should definitely be measured on, not only how successful they are at catching carp, but also how they continue to fish through adversity and respect nature.

Spot on Alex,you got what I meant..
If an angler is considered consistently successful in their catches,is prepared to learn as well,and respect the environment, and others,even though sometimes that itself is hard...they ,if they have both attributes,are good anglers.
Note,I use the word angler,...there is a difference tween an angler and a catcher of fish..
I know one angler,and lots of,catchers..

For me, carp fishing isn't just about catching the biggest carp in the lake. It's about appreciating every carp you catch and enjoying the natural environment in which you catch them

There's a few others for me too, Terry goes without saying, Nigel sharp, Jim Shelley, Simon bater, oz holness, they all hold high regard in ability, some more so than others on how they conduct themselves. For me though, those that keep themselves to themselves, have a regular full time job and family commitments takes some doing chasing the countries finest carp with any degree of success.
