Definitely agree that buoyancy is important if you need to fish somewhere you can't be on the deck. Also agree that colour, or maybe contrast against the surrounding area is also a big deal.

There was an interesting guy on one of the podcasts the other day who believes that the attraction in a bait only really gets spread around when it's eaten, chewed up and bits are pushed out of the gills in the filtering process. This makes a lot more sense to me than small percentages of something in a hard boiled ball designed not to break up easily drawing fish in from metres away.

That is why it is so important that a pop up is made from the correct materials. If it's rock hard bone dry and made with nothing good on the inside it's only a visual attractor. A good pop up needs to let attractors out

Just to add another dimension
Fished a murky runs water recently , everyone had bright hookbaits
I chose to fish one rod with a dark hookbait with 3 pva baits slid down the hook link
This rod out fished my other by 8 to 1
Both rods basically in the same spot
If I sold hookbaits I would only sell white, yellow and orange
Because that's what people want and would feel confident in
I try to make my own in the hope I'll find something that'll catch more , I'm still trying 😂
Are you sure?
