Exactly. Even on quiet waters it happens a fair bit. You bait an area regularly and someone turns up and sees fish in the vicinity, should they walk away and fish elsewhere? Not in my opinion. Otherwise baiting a swim to 'claim' it is no different to swim rotation.

a long time bailiff at my club water told me that at any one time up to 5 or 6 members have informed him

I only fish overnighters and I don't fish weekends. Any peg without an angler in when I arrive at the lake is fair game to me.
I don't see how any angler can claim a peg because he has been pre baiting thats just a load of bo@@ocks.
Personally I view pre baiting as a selfish act and believe it should be banned. You should only be allowed to put bait in when you are fishing.
All pre baiting does is fcuk it up for everyone else.

My club has a ban on pre-baiting. The problem I have is with swims permanently occupied by mates who act as teams and swop over a few days at a time. This leads to bait constantly going in the swim and can mean other swims are not worth fishing.

I think it all depends on the size of the water. I fished Bovinvton No:2 for 12 weeks. A few halfwits decided to dump 70k plus of maize in in one go, the place died and I did the off. Up until that point I was doing well.
Now, on big waters say 100 acres+ pilling a load of kack in like what I experienced at Bovinvton wouldn't cause too much of a problem, it'll just make the tufties rather plump.
Saying all pre baiting effs it up for everyone is simply ridiculous. One size doesn't fit all. It can cause problems on small waters, though it's not so much the case with larger the water is. I was pilling in 45kg plus a week in during the summer, literally had going insane on my spots. I didn't affect other anglers fishing as they were catching elsewhere and they too were putting in decent amounts of bait.

I like you only fish overnighters so to maximise the short time I get on the bank, I'll pre bait twice a week if possible, been a bit different this year due to COVID the lakes busy than normal so prebaiting has been almost a non starter this year. It's not selfish it's all about working with the time you have, think most are just to lazy to do it, if I can only bait up at 6 in the morn when it's pitch black the so be it. If you get a spot going it really can transform your season
