I always use a verticsl spool holder, which is basically the same as using the pencil method. I always soak the line overnight and wind on under tension, using a slightly damp towel where I'm holding the line before it goes on the spool. Pre soaked line acts like limp cotton. If it comes off wiry when you use it, dampen it down.

Yup, always soak mine for 24 hrs -I don't use a cloth.
Spool upright, naturally adds tension - personally I woudn't add more.

I do it like this with a chopped down milk carton and a pencil, sat in a baitbox for stability. Yes I know that isn't a spool of XT but you get the gist.
Bought a spool of xt a while back after all the recommendations on here and loaded it as per ESP video, it was bloody awful. Probably the worst line I've ever used, I kept it on for a few trips but got so fed up with the line twist I just binned the lot of it.

I always used Shimano technium black until you couldn't get hold of it. Changed over to Katran Synapse which was great and had no problems with but the syndicate has now imposed a .38mm line ruling so I've gone back and the Shimano technium black in 15lb.
