He does seem to over think it Mark Holmes.. but it does catch him a few
So more power to his elbow. But there has got to be easier ways to catch a Carp than using double hooks and dead baits.. me personally I'd of gone in with the spinners..

I came across someone who played around with using two separate hooks.
The second hook was at the end of hair.
I can't remember what bait it was, it definitely was not boilies, probably soft luncheon meat or similar.
I never found out whether it was successful

I've seen people use something simular as a way of mounting maggots. Hooking the maggots onto a small hook on the end of the hair and then pulling it into a piece of plastic sweetcorn which is already on the hair to secure. The small hook shouldn't really come into play when hooking a fish.

Why not? The below was caught in France this year on a 1.5 inch Relax Kopyto in motor oil (on a single hook!), shortly after losing another...

Watched the vid - Mark Holmes is a proven angler and has probably forgotten what most of us on this forum currently know . . .I don't think hes advocating using a double hook per se; this was a deadbait set up designed to catch a specific fish with the double hook presumably to assist mounting the bait (akin to a bait screw in boilie terms).
However it does beg the question; other than the obvious potential damage if / when using a sea fishing style double / triple dropper why is it cheating / unfair specifically using a V shaped Salmon hook? BTW I'm neither about to use / or advocate this, but who made up the rule that a single hook is any less damaging than a double V (in terms of carp or any other non-predatory species for that matter) and that is therefore, our only option. . .?

I think the state you see some fish mouths on waters where only single hooks used is evidence enough.
Most people like to catch a fish with a mouth and theres also the problem if your line were to part then a double hook could have 'sewn' the fishes mouth up making it harder to get rid of hook and not being able to eat at all
I think its just as bad when you see a lot of the pike that get caught with whacking great lures, one treble is in the side of the head and the other barely in or just outside the mouth and that seems to be classed as ' caught '. You might as well just use a seine net. I know theyve got huge mouths to fill but but c'mon.

Get the point about eating - if you're fishing for the table fish care itself is largely irrelevant. Question is when did using double hooks for catch and release / non predatory fish not become the expected norm / sporting choice? Dont want to open a can of worms here (pardon the pun) but is it in the fishing byelaws for coarse fishing (excuse my complete and total ignorance if it is) or just something we assume is 'the rules' / private lakes insist on?

Didnt think double/ treb hooks would have been the 'expected norm' for catch and release ? If i understand that correctly ?
I would assume it was progression from using double/ treble hooks for food fishing to single hooks to make it more sporting and conservational to the fish. Just like going from large barbs to mostly microbarbs/ barbless hooks.
Either way im glad it is mainly single hooks for the vast majority of fishing

He definitely didn't describe impaling the whitebait on one part of the double hook, both hooks were exposed.
I remember having a chat with a friend about rigs and I said "I wonder how many more we'd hook if we used a treble"? "perhaps we should try them"? And then we both laughed. I wonder?

No problem,
Could of been as simple as one bloke fishing with his treble hook and his two mates turn up needing a hook - pair of pliers and a bit of bodging theyre all fishing !
Essexandy Reckon youd hook a lot more on trebles but the mouths wouldnt last long and theyd all look like match lake fish
