Korum rods are sound.
I have a pair of 2lb barbel rods and a pair of the beefier 2.5lb barbel rods for the trent.
As I mentioned earlier, the 11ft 1.75 would be ideal for stillwater carp, feeder fishing for bream and tench, light to medium river work too.
It will throw a big loaded feeder up to 4oz with ease, and 5oz at a push.
The "all rounder" will be more through action, but the 1.75 is soft enough but it has some beef in the butt.

Just realised the korum aren't twin tip. Not necessarily a deal breaker, could get him using an alarm when ledgering
Does anyone know what the daiwa black widow rods are like? The blurb says full carbon but I'm guessing it's not 3k like the korum?

It's not a twin tip, but also it's not a very thin quiver. It would be OK for legering for fish that give a good pull, carp, bream, tench, but not too soft so it would be no good for float fishing.
Have a look at one in your local shop and you'll be surprised how versatile it is.

No matter how good a 1.75lb barbell rod is, it's designed for lobbing feeders and will be horrible for float fishing.
If you don't have a decent local tackle shop I would give Gary a ring at the Tackle Box and tell him what you are after. Seen them with lots of Dad's and kids going through rods in the store.

Got to agree, anything over 1.5lb for float fishing isn't going to work with a inexperienced angler. I had a1.25lb Torrix float made by M Tunley as a heavy waggler work rod and that's pushing it for silvers, though a 1lb Rudd was nice.
As said, I'd be looking for a feeder rod or specialist float anything bigger TC, wise while future proofing, might actually frustrate your child to the point of putting them off if they keep losing fish.

In my experience Korum rods are always understated for the tc - I had some 12' 2lb and they could lob more weight than my Torrix 2.25s! Also have some big water 13' 2.75 for silly Trent conditions and they can lob 10oz! . . .the all rounders in 1.25 should be pretty versatile.
Alternatively you could go for some pellet wag rods - I've got a pair of 10' Garbolino Rocket Carp that have a fine tip but def enough backbone for low double figure carp. My kids used these when progressing circa 10yrs old - I still use them occasionally in the summer on commercials when big lake fishing has gone quiet (post spawning)
