Yes the end of the middle section frame becomes the pivot point. When pressing down on the foot end that becomes the long section of the lever, and the short section is the couple of inches between the pivot and the hinge. The principle of levers massively exaggerating the force like a crow/pry bar. This is still true with elasticated cord of course, but the shock absorbing nature of that may reduce the effect? Or it could just be fatigued plastic, but both going shortly after the switchover is suspicious in my book!
