40% of UK working population don't have enough tucked under the bed to last a month without income. 10% have zero saving at all. Pretty big numbers for the rubber heads to make a rational fist of regards interest rates. Still they try though

I can remember in the 90s plenty of friends who gave their keys to the bank because they couldn't afford their mortgage. That actually happened we have no evidence of it happening today do we ?
The problem I guess is partly due to the obsession of homeownership in the UK.
I've some friends in Germany and they've been renters all their life.
I read that back in 2000 Uk home ownership was 70% of the population today around 60% perhaps the UK will transition to the German model in the next decade or so ?

Yes with rates where they are now and perhaps will be like this for some time now, it does look like the UK is simply transitioning away from home ownership, which would not necessarily be a bad thing.

As already said by Stuart, the rental market is crazy too. For too many people rent is even more than the equivalent mortgage as supply and demand is in favour of landlords. Rent prices soar just as mortgages do.
It's a market that's been rife with unscrupulous owners exploiting trapped families. Now the balance is starting to shift, honest landlords are selling up and getting out of it.
Of course, if you can claim for that London second residence you probably don't see all of this...

If I look back 5 years ago houses where I live prices have doubled, clearly folk didn't want to accept the days of affordability with home ownership had gone (were sucked into cheap mortgage deals thinking it will be ok and now blaming the government) spawning the birth of the renting generation in the UK.
Unless some property crash comes which I doubt it folk will just have to accept the change.

I wouldn't go so far as dictates on ownership, but there are a lot of unfair practices linked to the housing / rental / property sector and I'm all about fairness
