Thats exactly how i would recommend and build them , why on earth anyone would want 50ml guides on a fishing rod is beyond me . Sick of saying it . Just built 12ft torrix 2.25 tc 30ml to 10ml 9 guides plus tip , buyer can hit stupid distance with them . I wanted to put 25ml butt guide but he would,nt have it.

Yes, Kevin built my rods and my sons, he's strongly advocates using small guides. And yes, the rumours are that he has retired though his one page website still exists.

I'm an advocate of smaller guides and light leads, own 3 Baines rods and have 3 other rods that have 40mm sets on which I think would benefit from a strip down and re rung, what are your thoughts on these titanium American guides now available in 'k' style format but half the cost?

Yes mate i do the blank performs so much better with smaller guides , of course you have to have a decent blank to begin with but most blanks these days are decent ,50ml guides on a fishing rod serve no purpose whatsoever, if you are a tournament caster using a spod rod or beachcaster then it may give you a little more distance. I prefer to use kigans or fuji guides on the rods i build.

Noj, with all due respect (you post some great stuff), I'm not sure I buy into your argument of the eye ring diameters making no difference to casting, at least in my experience anyway.
The mono I use (Pro Gold and Touchdown 15 lb) are wirey, heavy lines that get twisted pretty darn quick :( .
I get more frapping, and slightly less distance using my 40 mm rods than my 50 mms.
This is just bog standard casting 70-90 yards.
Maybe it's my technique and I'm doing something wrong, but when my mono starts getting coiley, I get more and feel more comfortable when I'm going for a long chuck with my 50s. I always keep the angle of line on my finger as wide as possible.
Whatever, not saying I'm right, you're wrong, but personally I'd sway to a 50 for a big chuck with my gear, and like I say my technique is probably lacking.
BTW I much prefer lighter smaller guides and can't stand the heavier 50s, but sometimes needs must. :( .

For all out distance I don't doubt that 50s probably help, the same for using heavy mono or fluoro. I preferred my rods with 50s for using fluoro beyond about 50 yards but they are so detrimental to every other aspect of the rod I'd rather use sinking braid and 25mm guides. You also have a bigger window of performance and casting load range when you ring a rod closer and more tightly spaced, why I don't know.. I'm not a physicist, but having test built rods from 1.25 to 3lb it seems to be the case. The weight difference also means if you had a blank that performed well with 50-16 then 25-8 with 9 guides would potentially be so crisp that you close that performance window and it's unusable. So you need a 2.5 instead of a 3.5 to find a happy medium for usability. It's not as simple as putting little guides on and the rod becomes amazing.
It's personal choice where you compromise and lean towards casting or fishing rods. Though the fact there are rods capable of an average bloke putting .35 mono 150+ with 30mm guides, it's probably safe to say very few have the technique for TE's advice to be entirely relevant to them. I'd be first to admit I know nothing and care not about extreme range fishing, but I do know razorback can fish beyond the range of some folk using 3.75 blanks with his 2.25 baby snipers
