Waste of money imo, at least if you're going to use it on shore for mapping. Limited range, poor battery, lots of signal loss (gps-fix, wifi), annoying depth limitations. Mapping is rubbish because of all this. Works pretty decent from a boat, but when I compare depths/maps with my other sonars, its not half as accurate.

Completely disagree with this.
I do have a range extender but cannot cast it far enough to be out of range. Follow the guidance.... go to airplane mode and then open wifi for best range. I got the range extender for if i want to use it with the boat mapping.
Battery is great, I've never ran it out in multiple sessions, never had sign loss on gps once it connects which is pretty quick, no depth limitations on the chirp, mapping is excellent.

Personally I think it's an amazing bit of kit used properly. Part of the problem is understanding what your seeing on the screen and correctly interpreting that information.
I rigged up my spare Nash Bushwhacker spoon with mounts for the Chirp and Fishspy so you can actually see what the deeper Chirp information means when your moving over the lakebed, granted this only works in relatively shallow clear water say 6-8ft but it's certainly a big edge when your trying to find holes in weed and workout exactly what your fishing over and where to put a rig.
Not something I use all the time, but it's a nice tool to have in your armoury when needed. Glad I bought mine.

Have followed the guidance and it does the same on tablet and phone. This was my second one and my mate has the same issues. Heard others swear by them, so that's why I said in my opinion. Perhaps I was just unlucky. But never again for me.

I originally was going to get the chirp then saw they had released this version. From looking at the differences on the deeper website felt the cost delta didn't justify getting the chirp.

From what I could see it's just extra battery life which shouldn't really matter as most of us lug enough battery packs around to jump start a car. I too can't see what the extra cost beyond the standard chirp is really for.

Most users have issues because they don't position their phone or tablet high enough to create a clear line of sight . . .needs to be up on a storm pole if you're casting out with a rod and line. I've had signal with my Chirp at over 80yds no problems and without a range extender - with a bait boat (and range extender) it stays connected beyond where I can reasonably see the boat . . .

Tip . Pickup a camera tripod from a charity shop and attached a phone holder to it
Sorted.
Putting your phone to aeroplane mode and then switching on wifi only also helps.

You can pick up decent tripods on 7dayshop cheap enough 👍 I got one years ago and it's still going strong

Are you all just using a standard spod rod and heavy leader when casting deeper to prevent crack offs?
Is the issue with shallow water not showing a fault that is likely to be resolved? I fish a couple of really shallow lakes where identifying very slight changes in depth would be useful

Same as Toronto_Carp, 30lb braid straight through. The only difference for me is i use a wire trace too. The lake i fish has some pike in it and i've seen Deepers chased and bitten off, so i wont take the chance.
You can buy ready made traces for lure fishing with a strong quick change clip on it, works a treat.
