The splicing needles that I said and Ken has mentioned make it far easier.I used to hate making leaders but I find it a doddle now

It can be a right pain in the brain at first, it gets better. Just take your time and tease it trying not to compress it too much. Bare with it, you'll soon get the knack of it 👍

I'm pretty sure my needles are the original fox ones and never have a problem if your careful 👍

Fox easy splice needles are the best by far!
Bought 2 when they first came out and one is still in the packaging.

I have to agree I use the same one and find it so easy to do them with it, at the start it can be a bit fiddly but you soon pick it up and will be making them with ease in no time

heli leaders I do 1m and leaders for bags I do 12" as I like them slightly longer than most

Bump, interesting reading and I have a question
I used leadcore for a lot of years, mainly the ESP stuff, the needles can last a very long time, years. The art is not pulling the outer sheath and locking it up, you just need to tease it through and it I will come with very little pressure, if you are feeling pressure when you are pulling the needle you are locking the outer weave up by pulling it tight
in the leadcore guide in Cams link by Andy see his picture 6. When you get to this stage you need to hold the leadcore with your finger and thumb lightly around the needle (the bit you are trying to splice) if that makes sense and just tease it through loosening the outer as you do so, soon becomes a doddle
A question. Lead free seems to be all the rage, aside to the obvious, am I missing something other that it does not have a leadcore in it that can kink?

I've just bought a spool of the Gardner leadfree material and I have only noticed what you say, no chance of a kink. Not put it to use yet just had a bit of a play tying up some leaders but interested to see if it performs comparably, which per most reviews or should

Nice one mate. I have been contemplating going back to helicopters and looking at alternatives to leadcore. It will be interesting to hear how you get on with it or others. The only reason, I want something the hooklink swivel can pull or rub against that I can trust

I have been using leadless for about 10 years I like the suppleness and how it sits over any detritus, the weave obviously takes on water and acts as extra weight I have tried many versions of this and by far the best for me is the Vardis a nice loose supple weave, takes on water really well, very resilient and easy as sin to splice .

It's more supple, and a lot lighter. You'd have to weight to weight the rig for a chod but it's fine for anything else.
I prefer the rigmarole linktec tho so can't really recommend any. Ultra supple, ultra heavy and doesn't kink
