I've fished the arun on and off for fifty years and fished the rother, the arun in the lower reaches requires stronger tackle and and more powerful rods when the tide is in full flow. If you've read Pete springate's book moon River you'll see some of those sections are better fished from a boat.

Something I have been thinking about as well as the rivers for the most part are fairly inaccessible. I have seen someone pass me using a boat with their gear in near Watersfield, might well have been Pete!! Would love to read the book, seems hard to come by though, will have to keep my eye out. Thanks.

That's interesting. I'm in the market for some 2.75 Barbel rods, and the Hi-s are on my list, but I'd not heard good reports about them. Too stiff, poor playing action, so on, so on. Nice to get a differing opinion on them. I'd almost gone for the Daiwa Basia barbel rods, I'll have to have a re think.

Exactly what my mate found with his 13' 2.75 Hi S he said they just wanted to stay straight he sold them on and has replaced them with the New Harrison 13` rods and said they are so much better

Stiff? They're absolutely nowhere near stiff
They're better to play fish on than the 2.25 Fox Duo I had previously, and they feel softer in the tip until you load them up as the tip is slim for sensitivity. They make my S Lite carp rods feel like telegraph poles.
They've got lots of backbone yes, but you're not lobbing out an 8oz lead without that. I had 4 Barbel to 10.02 first time out and was grinning like a loon when playing them.
I've seen a few posts on Barbel forums/pages saying Hi S are soft actioned compared to the cheaper ‘S' or CTX blanks, but none saying they're too stiff.
Best rods I've ever had by a mile.

opinions mate
all I can tell you is he has lived close to the Trent all his life and fished for Barbel for the past 40 odd years on the Trent and found them too stiff and has used most rods he mentioned it on BFW recently there were some good posts on rods
