I bought a battered set of NGs a while back, gave them a rub down with some micro mesh in different grades and finished them with 3m ultrafina on a foam pad.....they came up a treat

wouldn't deal with fishcakes, 1200 grit for gherkin's though

Think it was 3 years ago I did my NGs, NGs blanks will withstand being flattened off a lot more than Armalites, Armalites have that circular varnish finish and it's when there tried to be made smooth too much you can lift the fibres whereas NGs are smooth from the off set, I'm far from being a rod builder but as a hobbyist let's say this what I've found especially on old Armalites I've purchased that someone has had a go on

Oatcakefred, after the rebuild, are the blanks now perfectly smooth and flat, or still retain the slightly bumpy finish that they originally had (assuming yours were like mine before you had them done)?

A bit of a long story with my Armalites really. I've had mine since 1987, they were originally built by Kevin.
I then bought some second hand Mk2's for my son off ebay. Think it was in 2014. There was nothing wrong with the blanks, but they were not built up that nicely so we went to see Kevin to get him to rebuild them. It took him a fair few months but it was over winter, so it wasn't too bad waiting for them. As soon as I saw them, I loved them so got Kevin to rebuild mine the following winter. Even though there wasn't anything wrong with them really. The blanks were fine before I had them done. Now they're nice and smooth.
