Nowt wrong with a bit of roadkill as in Deer, Pheasant or Rabbit if it bounces of the vehicle in front or your own so at least you know it's fresh, cut away the hemorrhaged meat bit tough when its gone into shock.

When we 1st went to Ruidera in Castilla La Mancha Spain to fish for the Comizo barbel we were using halibut pellets and boillies and getting slaughtered by the crayfish but if your bait stayed intact long enough you could get a bite
but the locals seemed to be oufishing us big style
eventually one showed us there local method .....get a size 2 hook and superglue a peice of foam to the back it and then superglue this onto the back of a live 2" or 3" live crayfish so the hook was stuck up like a fin if that makes sense
then row this out and drop over your baited area ....seemed cruel to us at the time so we never used it ....the locals just shrugged there shoulders laughed at us and carried on outfishing us ...it did account for alot of massive Comizo upto 35LB whilst we were there ..... might be a good method for catfish / pike / barbel but not sure if it would be legal in the UK ...

After the otter being trapped and dying in a crayfish trap on The Wensum recently, make sure you have the correct license if trapping cray's. There's bound to be more checks and you don't want to be accused of something you're not up to.

If the fishery allows livebaiting for pike, I don't see why it wouldn't be allowed. As long as the bait was caught from that water and not brought in from elsewhere.

To quote the gov.uk website (under fishing bylaws 'The use of crayfish, dead or alive, as bait or in bait is prohibited'. I wonder if anyone ever told Nashbaits about this? I also wonder why this law exists?

As Bugner says, it is illegal to return non-native crays to the water course.
It is also illegal to use them as bait in the UK.
