I would do it that way too.
Count how many wraps of braid on the braid spool.
Wind half back onto the reel spool.
Fill reel spool to lip with mono.
Transfer filled reel spool to empty reel spool thus reversing it.
For the second spool...
Repeat as above (parts 1 ,2 and 3 ) then transfer onto another old reel and spool I keep just for such purposes
If you have no spare reel use an empty bulk line spool with a nut and bolt as an arbour in a drill to reverse the line.
Doing it by calculation leaves too many variables and would do my head in.

Well by my detailed calculation (which as I have mentioned before kind of worked out on some other reels) I am looking at needing 300m 0.33mm mono as backing and then approximately 130m 0.19mm braid.
Do you know how long it would take me to wrap 430m round some distance sticks?!?!
I am still confused as to why Shimano state the spool capacity as 230m/0.4mm, 340m/0.35mm or 180m/0.45mm (the reels are Shimano BTR8000D EU by the way). Using the online calculator, 0.4mm to 0.35mm reckons 300m needed (not 340m), if I convert 0.45mm to 0.4mm it says 228m needed (spool states 230m so that is near enough). Have Shimano cocked up?

As stated before, the reels are to be used for barbel fishing where I am rarely lobbing a feeder more than 20 to 30 yards. 135m (half a spool of braid) is plenty sufficient. I have a pair of Shimano 6000D's spooled up in the same way, with half a spool of braid on each plus backing and there is no problem at all. You have to remember a 275m spool of braid costs £30 and up, so filling the spool entirely with braid is not really viable. A 1500 yard spool is £120, nearly as much as the reels

take it to the shop who have a line counter and a machine, best few quid you'll ever spend.
or if i want to split a 300m spool in half i put it round distance sticks, count the wraps then wind half onto a reel. if its not enough i wind it back onto an empty spare spool and add more backing.

Look at the spool and take a good guess, I'm thinking it's not a 100m spool and you need every 50m on each reel.

275m spool, so about 135m on each reel, but because it is thin braid (0.19), it's a little harder to judge than a bulk spool of mono!

Count the turns on the handle after measuring the fist one, work out how many equals the total required.

I had the day off school when we did maths so. I wrap the amount of line/braid I need then wind it on the reel followed by the backing. When full I either use a spare spool or use two old multiplyers to turn it round without twisting it then wind back on the original. Long winded but right every time

It's not too difficult, just the ratio of diameters squared x Length
So say stated capacity is 180 metres of .45
and you need the length of .4
Ratio of diameters .45 divide by .4 =1.125
1.125x1.125 x180 =228
