I know plenty like that
I'm not shy about spending a few quid on the right item, but I just can't see the value in most of the premium rod support systems beyond tartiness. I did fancy the mpe gear but by the time I got my head round spending that amount on metalware they'd folded.
I bought my mates xpod when he 'upgraded' to a patriot pod years ago
Not sure you could beat it for value, stability and simplicity.

The qr aspect and eliminating one potential twist point meant they offered more than just being prettier than my cygnet gear

Have a look on eBay at the Jag Prolite Grey stuff, discontinued now but you can pick up some quality bits for reasonable prices, best bankware I've ever had, keeps it's value within reason as well

I completely disagree with this pay for what you get statement that was the case years ago but not now and is definitely not the case with carp tackle most just out to make quick buck

Of course those pods are better I was saying that you cannot rely on that term it doesn't always apply don't think that something is more expensive that it's good

S/hand ones often go for £50 on facebook place market

It really depends what you want to do. If you are going to do a Steve Briggs or Darell Peck, then spending a small fortune on rods, reels etc would make sense as you are out fishing more than you are at home.
If, however, you just want to fish like a normal human then there is loads of great stuff around. Sonik Dominator X and Daiwa Crosscasts are great rods and Wychwood Riot 65s reels can't be beaten for the money. A JRC Contact SQR rod pod is bomb proof. You won't win any 'cool' carpy awards, but then if you are anything like me you won't give a flying f**k. I go fishing to enjoy myself, not to impress other people.

I wouldn't compromise on rods, reels, alarms or a pod etc. If you have fished before and your serious imho.
Bivvies and crap like that are near on disposable items for me, couple of seasons they are probably knackered, buy a cheaper version for me.

It's a tent ffs which will be knackered or leaking in a year or two, if they came with a 5 year guarantee I can kind of see the justification in a £300 or £400 investment in a tent , otherwise, total rip off for me

The problem with Carp Tax is there will always be someone willing to pay. I put a similar post a while ago about my worries if someone like Angling Direct ends up buying all the tackle shops and then charging whatever they like.
Yes £400 is extortionate for a pod (there are even some around £600-700) especially if you look at what the parts actually cost and mass production pretty much drops labour costs to nothing so the mark up will be unbelievably massive. Take a look at Defiant MPS which is a UK company (I believe one person) hand building pods at prices that are amazing. The problem there is some people will look at a MPS pod at say £220 and think it can't be that good because Solar make there at £600.... when the reality is the quality is most likley identical or better in regards to the MPS due to the custom/bespok make.
It is the same with Reels, I own some Daiwa Tournament 5000T reels because I like the look of them and embrace the 'retro' (also known as wobbly and creaky) feel. These cost me just under £280 each which I happily paid even through I knew the Shimano Aerlex reels I started off with many years ago at £70 would do the same job and most likely last (for my use) just as long. My mate has 3 x Basia reels because he associates their £700 price tag as being the best you can get, however he has had massive issues with 2 of them and they have been back several times to Daiwa.
It's the same with most things as YouTube etc makes it worse as we get to see just how amazing a £700 bivvy is on the lake in france, with 2 x Infinity Rods strapped to the side and 3 more on a £400 pod, £3k worth of reels and dropping £30 quid worth of leads on a 5 days session the norm. In reality I would imagine 90% of anglers could get the exact same results with a £150 bivvy, a £250 rod/reel combo and a £50 pod but you just wouldn't feel as cool as those YouTube 'celebrities'
Like it or loathe it, but carp fishing is only becomming a bigger business, I went to the NAS a few years ago with my son who was 12 at the time and 90% of the 'pro/celebrity' anglers we met were great and spoke with him/had their picture with him, however a few of them seemed to think they were more important than the pope and wouldn't give us the time of day which I believe is another indication the sport can go one of two ways in the future.

Celebrity carp anglers, that's a new one . Famous ones for doing special things in the pastime, yes, celebrity, spare me. I could not think of anything worse than been identified as a celebrity carp angler, yeah, he's the scruffy sweaty one over there with all the fit chicks round him
As long as I can find somewhere peaceful and I can crack on with my fishing I'm happy. I look through the Internet window at what goes off and I find a lot of it just unbelievable, some of it even cringeworthy
It's just a marketing machine driven by greed and people trying to claim fame
