Before anyone can answer your question you have to determine what is expensive, that was the sort of point i was trying to make in my post.

But do you think that paying £300 for a net when you can get one for £20 or £800 for a bivvy when you can get similar for less than half the price helps the tackle companies charging top dollar to be able to keep charging it. e.g. If we all suddenly bought £300 bivvies they'd have to reduce their prices right?

valid points already made by everyone about what is expensive.
My take, and aptly it is comparable to golf, is that you find:
1. those who never want to spend a lot, through choice or they cant afford it
2. those who will buy the most expensive things they can because they can, or they'll do whatever to get it
3. those who buy what they need for a purpose
i.e. I upgraded my irons, I spent hours at a fitting to find I was hitting much better with £450 irons than I was with £950 irons. I bought what suited me. Some people wouldn't buy the 450 irons because they are person no.1 above, some would have bought the £950 irons to the detriment of their game because they are person no.2 and then someone like me (no.3) buys the best suited clubs for themselves.

The Dyamg net is a bad example imo. Dymag gear is hand built by a very skilled man. The bivvy is defo a better example mate. No excuse for mass produced Chinese bivvies going for top dollar. It is a p*ss take.

I agree with Daz if people are paying these silly prices they are helping the company's charge e.g. £1400 for bivvy more and it doesn't mean that someone can't afford these high prices they just won't be ripped off there's lots of people buy expensive gear on credit to show there better off than they are in all walks of life I know well off people who drive around in an old car and wear cheap clothes they have nothing to prove

For sure that is the case for mass produced products but I don't think bespoke machined/anodised distance sticks or hand built landing nets fall into this category.

A rod and reel is, that's why i buy custom made rods and top end reels only from companies that specialise in reels, value for money again achieved in the longevity of the products life span.
Funnily enough there are a lot of posts on here commenting on the superior quality of items bought in the past versus today's equivalents.

We whinge when company A has Factory 27B build pattern 72C in China and add £X amount to the cost - we even call it carp tax ... When a UK company manufactures something and sells it with a margin based on their overheads, we whinge - IF you want a cheaper product, fine, buy one. If you want a high end product buy it also.
The feat of engineering or lack of, does not come into it.
We, as a consumer, have been absolutely spoilt rotten over the years with cheap tat from all over, we bemoan the lack of industry in the UK and in the next breath buy hand over fist cheaper imports. We cannot have it both ways... This is across all sectors, not just fishing ta(t)ckle. Ebay Vs the local tackle shop - Tescos, et al Vs the local shop - all based on more bang for your buck, I understand that we are all looking to save money, but as capitalists, that's what we all are, regardless of our political persuasions, we have truly bongoed up the world in the never ending search to save money at the detriment to the value that we get for the money spent. I am the same, hold my hands up - love it, whoring my credit card for a deal.
