My choice would be.
13ft treb lite
Daiwa 6000T with weston line lay conversion.
4oz - 5oz lead.
Mainline / leader depends on if the venue is very weedy, or not, and any venue braid bans.

Terry Edmonds cast 254 yards and didn't need any fancy rods or reel

So you'd class a 4.5 or 5lb rod as not being a fancy rod for distance fishing...hmm
Keep in mind that most 'distance' rods are up to 4lb I'm not sure there's a comparison to be made there!

The point I was trying to get across was this;
Some of the setups mentioned in this thread for distance casting are in the region of £1k per rod and reel.
Terry didn't use a £300+ casting tool such as a Hi-S 200, Treb or Treb lite, nor a Basiar or Tech Mag. You can pick up a harrison spod rod reasonably cheaply and Daiwa Windcast QDA for less than £100.
Bonus is you could always use them for spod and marker work when you are not trying to cast to the horizon

Conversely I would say It would have been interesting to see what difference a Basia would have made to him if any.
I would go so far as to say very few people have T's ability and a Basia MAY add the extra few yards to make a difference.

I've said before, if all you want to do is fish at LONG range, you could buy 3 spod rods for the price of 1 high end rod. Granted, not a Harrison one. But a free spirit mrs is about 100 quid and 4lb or something, have seen these used and they're no more wooden than a 3.75 infinity... ****ing horrible to play a fish on, but so are a lot of other rods that cost 3 times as much

You are correct, they don't look the long range part compared to some designs.
Unless you are Terry Edmonds or Hutch, who can cast the most un-Aerodynamic leads shapes obsurd distances still.
At the top end, you are looking at tiny perecentage gains in areodynamics to break records.
Whether it is a Roger & Kerry, a Distance Casting, Distance Casting or a ball lead shape, It is all about a nice balance and comprimise between weight forward, Aerodynamics, very smooth finish and being the most stable in flight with minimal wobble for YOUR casting style.
I was make very aware of this very fact, during carpy banter over a curry, after a carp society meeting at Aquatels, back in the early 90's with some of the essex boys that fished over in Kent , and the one and only Alan Partridge was amongst them, who a long time after this, still using the same lead design, managed to convince Danny Fairbrass that his own lead shape now marketed as the Korda Distance Casting was better than the normal Tournament Casting/zipp shape.
Tiny Percentages, push the boundries. The rest is history.
