My brother is a scientist working on cattle, Bse , he's been given a letter stating he's a key worker for travel. A mate is a haz-chem tanker driver and so has he. Other people I know are working and have no letter. Definitely need clarity for the reason you mentioned.

Where did they get the letters? Their employer? I don't think it's from the government?
Unlike France there is currently no need for a letter in this country as far as I'm aware.

My employer is issuing us with letters in the next few days in case we get stopped by police travelling to and from work.

Yes mate the employer, I believe they approached the government for clarification if the employees were key workers and the answer was yes.

My work has letters for us too......haven't bothered printing one yet although I'm not back until Monday.....

Our letters were given to us by our employer, the letter states our names, the company business, what we supply and where we are supplying to, the place of work i have to travel to and the hours when it is open and hours we may travel.
The company believes we will need them
I am an engineer for a large food manufacturing company, before the key worker lists were announced we were told we would be classed as key and also others that make things for medical or just to keep services working (water gas etc)for these companies .
The enforced social distancing at work that started 2 weeks ago included queing outside with 2 metre gap, allowed in 1 at a time , have to sit at seperate tables during breaks, one entrance on site another off, the shift end times have changed so the shift leaving site will have left before the shift arriving

A couple of my neighbours have let their kids play out the front together all afternoon completely ignoring the government warning. Selfish idiots probably sick of having them locked up indoors and wanted some peace and just sent out for few hours to get them out their hair.
