Wrong, they say building works are key workers, they say manufacturering jobs are key workers. Really isn't the case unless building hospitals or making medical supplies or food etc

You don't have to be a key worker to work as I understand it. Think about those working in manufacturing (they do not appear on the list). The specified key workers (healthcare, education, public services, food, government, utilities and transport) won't get very far if the equipment they need isn't available. Manufacturing has to carry on where possible.

This is the issue I was having earlier in the week. I had several breakdowns to attend to but all the merchants were shut so I couldn't repair anything. Thankfully now most have opened with new safety measures in place. For instance at plumb centre we aren't allowed in branch. We log into our online accounts, pay for the materials up front, they pick the order, we call them from outside and they leave them outside the door for us.
It's not perfect but it allows us to get people's hot water and heating back on. But I won't be able to do that if the replacement parts aren't being manufactured.

Exactly. I'm still working (one of just 3 guys of a usual 65 left in our office now!) in manufacturing. We supply into medical devices amongst other things. We're not on the list of key workers but we can't stop.
Look at the F1 teams. They're hardly key workers but they're now temporarily manufacturing ventilators. They need to work.

I'm with you here Goose , key workers only , I'm self employed and have industrial jobs to complete , I also have loads of paperwork to do in an office but I'm staying home

At my place we don't manufacture medical supplies. We manufacture standard components that can be used in most industries. Some medical suppliers buy off-the-shelf from us. There is a difference.

It just illustrates what I said in post 210, to some the rules are clear and simple and morons everywhere are ignoring them, others have to go to work(if there is any) and the message from gov is carry on

that's what the wage subsidy packages are for surely.
in the case of F1 teams as an example, making bits of Lewis Hamilton's car isn't essential, BUT, if they are now supporting the making of medical equipment then the need for them to work has shifted.
