Hi,

I recently got myself a second hand ridgemoney baitboat for £200, beautiful condition but the battery just constantly flashing red when charging. One holds charge and the other doesn't.

No I'm the kinda guy that refuses to throw anything away so I did what I do best and I cracked the batterys open. Well the one not holding charge anyway.

Sure enough, upon inspection I noticed corrosion on the motherboard and a popped capacitor.

My question for you guys is, has anyone got the data sheet for the board ( tells me what capacitor is where) or has anyone else attempted this and found one that works.

Could ask the manufacturer for their help at ibaiter.com

For your sake I hope to be wrong but I think the chances of getting the data sheet is slim.
As mentioned the best places to start would be ibaiter.or you could try LINKY POO™ https://www.badcaps.net/

Maybe the corrosion has caused something to blow the capacitor, so just changing the capacitor will cause it to blow again?

I've cleaned the board and all seems fine on the multimeter apart from the blown capacitor, I'm going to try and fix because it would be a shame to waste a good battery just because of something that cost less than 10p to replace.

Agreed.
Years ago when electronics used to be a hobby of mine capacitors rarely used to go.
Nowadays with the introduction of pulse mode/switch mode power supplies it's more common for capacitors to fail.
It's easier to find the value of failed electrolytic capacitors as you can read the value printed on the side.

I'm not sure what type of capacitor you have though.

Sorry that's no help but I wish you luck.
If you do fix it you'll get a great sense of achievement
If you don't at least you can say you gave it a go, which is rare in this throwaway society

I'd give badcaps.net a go
Let us know how you get on

I was ging to say the same thing re what's printed on it, values or bands. If I'm right looking at C13 the one next to it, if it is the same maybe it has something readable on the underside?
I know very little of electronics, I'm used to capacitors being round.

Components tend to be surface mount nowadays. That plus the miniaturising of components is what killed my interest in electronics, it all became to small to work on.
Do you remember the first electronic ping pong games?
You had to buy Practical Electronics for 6 months and build one of those games over that time in stages.
Now there's more electronics built into something no bigger than a head of a matchstick

Yeh nothing printed on these and you are correct, c13 is the one that has gone. I fix drones in the background also so don't mind working on miniature pcb boards. I've ordered a selection of capacitors in the 1206 range, this size, I will test them and what ever tests like the one next to it will get popped on with the hot air solder gun. Thanks for your help tho guys.

My Hunter 750 gave up the ghost and the batteries wouldn't hold any charge after only a few months. I contacted their returns department and they arranged pick-up and replaced the batteries and now it's as good as new. They come with a 2 year guarantee and was pleasantly surprised at the good service. (Although would have preferred not to have needed it.)

Obviously being second hand, you're probably not going to get the same treatment but I would suggest contacting them and explaining your problem, you don't know until you ask.

So, update, the board has been repaired but still got issues. One of the battery cells are dead, I've ordered a replacement from aliexpress, when it arrives and is fitted I will let you know if it works again.

Was it just the one capacitor that needed changing?

Well Well Well

We have good news, capacitor changed and new battery cell replace and we are all up and working.
Popped it on charge and after about half hour it pinged green. Very happy with the outcome.

Sitting at a steady 12.57v, just like my other battery when fully charged
Are you sure?
