How do they make a rod differ apart from size ?
Much weight difference , and can they make a rod softer or stiffer or no difference.
Will be looking to have guides replaced on some free spirit rods next year. Not bought for range work. 100 yards max

As a general rule of thumb, larger or heavier rings will make a blank softer.
The other thing to consider is single or triple leg. I've had rods rebuilt from triple to single and completely changed the feel to me (for the better.)

I've recently had some 2 3/4tc rods rebuilt with ten guides plus the tip.
Starting with a 25mm butt guide, they're bloody lovely and the line absolutely whistles out. I opted for the ridiculously expensive Fuji Titanium Torzite K Guides, all ten guides weigh less than a standard 50mm guide. Search Fuji New Guide Concept.
I've recently had some 2 3/4tc rods rebuilt with ten guides plus the tip.

Pick a 12 foot HiS rod up with 40s on and then a 50. Completely different feel, 50s feel nice, 40s pokerish

This was my worry. Got a set of S lite SL Ives in 3.5lb 12ft.
Was looking down the like to have a set of 40s put on but didn't want them becoming too stiff. Interesting read on that Fuji guide page thank you

The rod won't change and become stiffer, as the blank is the blank...
It will feel more responsive and less floppy as there is less weight towards the tip so more zippiness.
The extra weight of a 50 won't matter, but it's the other intermediates adding bulk to the tip and deadening the action a fraction.

Over the winter I had my Torrix TE's rebuilt and moved from Kigan 3d rings to the American tackle TI forged rings... Still both 50mm ringing but was a massive difference in the weight of the rod and also how they feel on the cast.

My experience of rods with 40mm and 50mm rings are, the weight of the rings make them tip heavy and not pleasant to hold.
Plus, if you have limited bank space to set up, and you need your butt ring behind the alarm etc especially when you are snag fishing etc or just for comfort of mind as a preventive measure to stop the rod being dragged in, because the butt ring is that far up the blank near the spigot, it can be hard to get your rodd butt far enough back to get the butt ring behind the alarm.
I have never found playing fish a pleasant experience as the line cuts across the arc of the curvature of the rod and I always get that "Jag Jagging" feeling as the line goes through the rings.
So, I only have 30mm butt rings on the rods that I use and are far more pleasant to use. I can hold them for ages if I am stalking as they are balanced with the weight of the reel, do not need much room to get the rod butt back to get the ring behind the alarm nd playing fish is a pleasant experience as the line follows the arc of the rod.
Basically these big ringed rods are just specialist tools for long distance fishing, sadly though every manufacturer thinks all carp rods need them when they don't. I can fish happily up to 100 metres with 30mm butt rings.

All my own personal rods are built on the fuji guide concept which is what kev baynes had been doing for years Dave lumb also similar. I have just built myself 3 Anglers workshop 2.25 t.c 12ft (baby snipers) with 30ml butt guide 25 ml dbl leg on butt section and 8 single leg guides plus tip on tip section. Cast on field this morning 2 3/4 oz lead with single boilie . Put a hula hoop( not the snack ) and out of 10 casts 8 went in at 125 yds . The thing with only a few guides on a blank is the line slapping the blank hindering and more chance of frapping. with lots of guides this cant happen. Also with more guides the cast is far more accurate . Of course the likes of Terry edmonds etc will whack a lead out of sight with any configuration but for a fishing rod i prefer smaller and more guides .

I've convinced myself I need 50mm rings for heavy flurocarbon, is this just in my head?
Also, did I invent it, or do I remember some time ago there was a butt ring that was really long? Like 25mm and 4 or so Inches long. Like the center off a ticket roll. Maybe beach anglers use them?

For distance ? He would,nt like mine then . 10s and the line flies through them .Why does everyone want distance rods ? Most of my biggest uk carp have been caught within 20yds of the bank . I get it on continental waters . I have seen blokes using 13ft 4lb rods 50ml rings on leeds liverpool canal !! Ffs
