They are mug fish who are a pain in the arse for going through lines in the margins. Used to float fish for them in France to pass the time

I'd be happy to see them return to our rivers but unfortunately there's not too much chance of success while the water companies and pumping 5hit into them on a regular basis.

I HATE THEM WITH A VENGEANCE Completely ruin fisheries ZERO skill in catching them they are just a stupid eating machine
I have often been plagued with them in France often catching the same fish several times during the trip god forbid they get a hold on our rivers it will ruin the barbel and chub fishing

Would be nice of course, but having read the link you posted i can see a lot of problems with the conditions needed for it to be a real success, like migration, gl with that. In russia and the usa conditions are way better, and it kinda annoys me how "conservationalists" in western europe think they can recreate nature while at the same time overpopulate that same area. It simply doesn't work like that.
But they are a great animal, and i always felt sorry for them catching them day in/day out on closed off waters.

I am a bit surprised by how strong some feelings are against them. But then again carp anglers....
I've never seen one or fished for one. Just seen the majestic creatures on various fishing programmes from the likes of Jeremy Wade et al.
I've heard rumours of a big one in an old mill lake in Lancashire but it could be an urban legend

sadly that the trouble with people like you !
that havent seen the way some waters are completely ruined by this species
( bit like the people that advocate Otters ) seeing them as an unusual fish and maybe good to catch
they cant and dont see how it can badly effect waters
and I AM NOT just a Carp angler I more concerned about our rivers and this and catfish getting a hold and completely upsetting the Balance the Barbel and chub have already started to decline

Yeah me too. Well i understand it for closed off waters, and i understand the worry about balance in certain waters, but when we are talking about big delta's it could work. I mean, catfish population has exploded over europe (almost 2 meter long species literally 300 meters from my home in freaking holland) and it still has a excellent coarse population for both carp and match anglers. But now i see topstaryoutubecarpanglingprofessionals screaming like little bitches when they hook a small catfish, eeew not going to touch that, they might put slime on my white sneakers, ghegehg

Think you need to chill out a bit bud. It doesn't say it explicitly in the article but it's about reintroducing them to rivers. Not shoving them in lakes.
One sad outcome of this sort of thing is that it shows that carp will never be considered a native species in the UK. Sturgeon have been missing from our native ecosystems for stupidly long. They have evolved without them. Yet they are still classed as a native species. Sad reminder that NE are idiots.

So wasn't the Sturgeon a native UK species that got overfished/polluted, whereas Barbel were stocked/invasive in west flowing rivers? And mainly for matches? And the report is on about rivers, not stillwater. And carp are massively invasive.
Maybe a few 500lb sturgeon will give the otters something to munch on 🤷🏻♀️
