Hi, I am currently on my syndicate. I have both 12 and 13s. I'm really struggling with distance on the 13s both sets are identical. Does anybody else struggle with 13s?

Yes I find compressing 13s harder
Someone more technical could maybe say why
Got some 12 ft 9inch century parallel butt rods I have learnt
To use them nearly properly, animal rods but soft tip,
Different rods require different styles maybe
My free spirit pike rods are a slower taper and I can use them
Properly.
Ahhh don't think I get the tip moving fast enough on cast

The longer arc of the lead may mean you need you need to speed up the cast to get the most from the 13ft rods. Try punching it once you've got the lead moving, rather than snatching at it from the start.

Best bit of advice I can give you is before you start spending out a fortune on new rods. Book a lesson with Terry Edmonds. The lesson will cost you £100 for a Saturday morning. But he will guide you to the right rod for you and sort out your casting style. You will save a fortune on rods and reels and you will be casting further than you thought you were capable of.
I went to him, he set me up with 13' Harrison 3.5 rods, at the end of the morning I was casting further and more accurately.

Everyone is different - I had a set of 13ft from Simpsons, Eclipse, Jim Gibbinson? I can't remember exactly, but I never got on with them and they were a pain in swims with over hanging trees. I sold them after a couple of seasons use. I find I can cast further with a 12ft rod and technique matters much more than the rod. I am a very capable caster, always have been. Based on what I see on the bank, many people aren't and also could be using gear that isn't helping them. As someone else suggested, have a casting lesson and see what that highlights... I did some guiding for a while, pike fishing from the boat and the one thing I worked on with clients more than anything else, casting - with baitcasters of course. Amazing how you can improve things for someone with some observation and helpful tips.
I use zig extensions on my Free Spirit Hi S and S rods, making them 14ft and casting out zigs is such a faff, but crucially playing fish with long zig lines is way better. It's a trade off I live with

A very capable caster will be capable of casting rads of any length. Of course technique is key, go to a casting tournament and all the top distance casters are using 13ft plus rods so longer rods combined with the technique will outcast shorter rods.

I was under the impression that it was a Fact ?
that compressing a 13ft rod is harder than compressing a 12 ft rod and thats the reason people some can cast further with a 12ft rod if they cant fully compress a 13ft rod

I have to admit I thought it was the opposite, but could very well be wrong...?
A 13ft rod would be slightly softer than a 12ft rod of the same TC along its length. Therefore easier to compress and the additional arc created by the longer rod length gives greater tip speed and longer distance (assuming correct technique)
I can cast further with a 13ft rod, but don't like the feel of fishing with them. I go for a 12'6 for my distance rods. Probably a just personal thing until you get into the physics of marginal gains in tournament casting where everyone has animal technique.

Many seem to judge on how far some one can cast but accuracy is often more important. Someone I grew up with has no interest in distance cast and never fishes much over eighty yards but he can put a rig on a spot up to that, fire rigs under overhanging trees often in confined space and makes it look easy. Then you see guys like Terry edmonds that can fish at one sixty plus accurately and spod the same.

I find my 13fters very whippy compared to my 12ft rods. But I do struggle for accuracy with the 13 rods. I might have to get a set of 12ft6 rods to have a look at as the best compromise.
