I seem to remember reading somewhere that some of the internals on the originals were brass rather than aluminium (re-released). There's a good chance I've remembered this completely wrong.

It's dead easy, take the handle off mate, the spindle will be square or hex

Also, assuming it hasnt been changed the originals had SiC line rollers whereas the new have the TiN twistbuster line roller.
Regarding the internals ive heard it mentioned that the very first maybe had Phospher bronze (absolute best) pinion gear.
But if not it would be a brass pinion and machined aluminium main gear as theyve always been same as the tournies

Square drives were first, then the 1st hexdrives arrived. The re rereleases are also hex drive but as correctly stated the newer version have duraluminium main gears. Generally the earlier versions have the black coating to the drive gear whereas the later versions are a clear anodise so silver/pale champagne colour so pop the handle out to see.

The earlier tournys had the better gearing whereas the latter version also has the duraluminium drive gear

there is also a difference on the spool, with one version have a slightly more prominent lip than the other

Easiest way to know if its square or hex drive is the small sticker on the handle.
With the re-released hex drive version the decals on the handle are printed.
My last of 4 is serviced by Weston, but if the drive gear is worn there are no new spares...

the Originals have the "One Touch Handle" badge on the handle, the Re-Releases have just a print.
The Originals had black line rollers, the Re-Releases had the golden Twistbuster ones. Those are the easiest things to tell them apart. Not all Originals were square-drives, the earlier ones had the square shafts but later editions ( of the old Originals ) then changed to hex drives.

Slightly off topic but is there a big difference between the TS5000 and the SS3000?

Really???? I thought the SS3000 had spools similar to the Emblem Spod reel whilst the tournies where a more tapered spool.
