About to respool one of my reels.Im going to leave some of the old line on the spool ,as backing. So what is the best knot to attach the new mono to the old mono? Cheers guys.

If its just backing then there is no need to knot the new line to the backing.
Just fill the backing, tape two wraps of insulation tape to seal it in place then treat it like a shallower spool.

To join two monos of similar diameter the strongest and neatest knot I know is a double blood knot. This is for mono only. Properly tied it is incredibly strong.

That's what I did in the end,insulation tape.
BTW I tried a reef knot like someone suggested and it just kept slipping, was that me or is it not suitable for mono to mono?

Problem with insulation tape is that the adhesive squeezes out under the pressure and over time makes the line sticky. I speak from experience.

Yep, amalgamation tape is better, but I no longer use tape and tend to Albright.

I've tried several different types and makes over the years and had the same problem every time. The worst was using it on my Penn mackerel feathering reel. Maybe it's the kind or amount of use the spools get. Haven't done it for years, won't do it again.

No idea, been doing it on spools I used week in week out with no issues whatsoever. I do wrap it very tightly so maybe something to do with that? Plus I tend to make sure I have a lot more line on top than I'd ever need, so maybe that prevents the tape being squeezed and oozing out the glue

Try it Onslow,.I thought it was just me tying it wrong,but it defo just slips with mono.
