I'm thinking of buying some base mix to roll my own baits and just wondered what the real perks/benefit of rolling your own baits has. Obviously there's the fresh factor but thought I'd ask and see what opinions are out there

It can be very cost effective if you are on a budget if you put together your own base mix.

feels great to catch them on your own recipe that you have rolled yourself.

You get quality time in the shed away from the Mrs.

Perks: high quality bait for less money, super fresh, good feeling to catch on your own bait...
Cons: some loose their head and start to overcomplicate things, you need to spend time in the shed to roll your baits

You get one extra thing to worry about and question when you blank.

Just keep everything nice and simple and don't go silly with loads of additives.

For around £3.00-£3.50 per Kg you can make yourself a bait you can have total faith in, you don't need to roll loads either- roll and store a kg for Hookbaits in the fridge not the freezer, then keep glugging in whichever liquid food you have used in the bait, I do it every Monday and they just keep soaking it up.

There's no need to roll for pre-baiting/freebies either if your short of spare time – just buy cheap boilies and/or 14mm halibut Pellets and pre-glug in the same liquid food as the bait you have made, the day prior to a session.

I use exactly the same own rolled bait for Carp, Cats, Barbel and Chub.

Cost, freshness, using a unique bait, being able to roll a variety of sizes and shapes, actually knowing for sure what's going into your bait. There really is no comparison imo

There a positives and negatives.
You can use your own unique mixes and find interesting new combos. You know what's in it and how old it is and you can make whatever shape and size you want. Negatives......the initial cost to buy the good materials, the time to make it and lastly and most importantly, you can cock it up easily! Not all brands produce poor baits anymore, there are some clever people out there who have done things properly so that you do not have to waste time questioning what is worthwhile for the inclusion in your recipe.
I loved my days tinkering in the shed but I also wasted a huge amount of time and money! Maybe a good basemix from a good supplier is a good compromise and starting point.

You can buy a box of 12 eggs, use 6 to knock up a kilo of bait then make
a nice 6 egg omelette.
